Monday Harness Preview for 2/17/2014
by Ted Black
After a week in which Winter Storm Pax wreaked havoc with the racing on the East Coast, harness racing fans should find a full slate of races on Monday when Dover Downs, Pompano Park and Yonkers Raceway host live cards. Plenty of great betting opportunities to be had!
In the opening race on the program, give Non Pareil the chance to rebound from a narrow setback last week despite starting from post seven this evening. Non Pareil sat a loose pocket trip and closed well late to just miss by a neck last week, but she should be able to make her presence known throughout the mile this evening and turn the tables on her top foe.
Two races later in the third race on the card at Dover this evening, look for Scarlet Pandemic to regain her winning ways in this non-winners of $9001 last six starts class for fillies and mares. Last week in the same class she showed speed early but got locked in behind a tiring rival and found room late to get third, beaten just a neck in a good effort. She should be able to control the tempo from the outset this evening.
Several races later in the 10th, a non-winners of $12,000 last six starts class for pacing distaffers, expect Paradise Lost and Angelwithanattitude to complete the exacta. Paradise Lost has been buried in the Filly-Mare Open for the last three weeks and finally gets some much needed class relief, while Angelwithanattitude just missed in this class last week as the 7-5 choice and certainly merits respect.
Three races later in a non-winners of four races lifetime event for fillies and mares, give Movie Sequel a chance to atone for a narrow setback last week. Away in midpack, Movie Sequel got shuffled and buried and finally found room late to rally for the place spot. If she can work out any type of trip tonight, Movie Sequel will find the winner's circle.
Then one race later in the penultimate race on the card, be weary of trying to beat Jk Letitgo/ Granted, horses at 7-5 on the morning line are very tempting to play against, but Jk Letitgo has won both of her starts this year in sharp, handy fashion and it might be wiser to simply sit back and watch her compete than look to play against her at 2-5.
That same evening at Yonkers, the two best plays on the card look like they're in the same race. In the eighth, a $20,000 claiming affair, Hot Roddy and Fox Valley Action could complete the exacta despite their dramatically different styles. Hot Roddy, a former star on the Delaware circuit, has tons of speed, while Fox Valley Action loves to close. Last week Fox Valley Action raced first over into a wicked back half, so he should be poised for another good outing.
That same evening at Pompano, a trotter and a pacer look like the best plays.
In the seventh, a conditioned event for trotters, take a shot on Jam And Jelly, who endured a long, first over journey last week and finished third against slightly lesser. He will likely have to overcome another outside trip this evening, but last week's effort should have been an ideal tightener.
Then two races later in a conditioned event for filly-mare pacers, look for Julias Song N to work out a winnable trip. Last week she was shuffled and locked in at a crucial stage of the race and found room late and rallied boldly to finish second, missing by a scant nose. With any type of trip tonight, Julias Song N will easily make up that narrow margin.
