Mucciolo’s Top Three 2026 Kentucky Derby Prep Races

A total of 25 races took place domestically on the 2026 Road to the Kentucky Derby, and I feel that the three-year-olds that wintered in the Sunshine State were, in general, the best prospects for the Run for the Roses. Below are the trio of qualifying races I feel were the best ones.
Florida Derby (G1)
I’m fairly confident that most handicappers will agree that the Gulfstream Park feature was THE premier prep race for three-year-olds this spring, and it’s difficult for me to think it’s even debatable at this time. It was an oddly run race that resembled a turf contest to some extent, where the group established dawdling early fractions prior to closing swiftly late, evidenced by the robust Brisnet Late Pace numbers (121-117-117) earned by the top-three finishers. But it was a strong tilt, nonetheless.
In addition to the top trio of Commandment, Chief Wallabee, and The Puma, Todd Pletcher’s Grade-3 winning Nearly was not terribly far back in fourth, and the colt is a very talented sophomore with a bright future in his own right. The Florida Derby had great depth, and the top finishers in the cast were also impressive from a visual standpoint, too. This was surely the deepest Kentucky Derby prep race.
Fountain of Youth (G2)
While I am undoubtedly biased to races featuring both Commandment and Chief Wallabee, a deeper dive into the Fountain of Youth shows that this field was very strong. The closing splits of the contest were excellent, and while only the aforementioned top duo are the ones moving on to Louisville, there were some real runners that went to post.
Third-place finisher Solitude Dude came back to convincingly win the Bay Shore S. in his next assignment and might evolve into one of the better one-turn runners in his crop as the season progresses. Bravaro was fourth and made a good middle move in the subsequent Wood Memorial (G2) at Aqueduct before settling for a decent fourth under the wire. Napoleon Solo was fifth in his 2026 unveiling, but he is a Grade 1 winner with huge early speed and another who could be a major one-turn performer later in 2026. In terms of talent, the Fountain of Youth was long on that trait.

Louisiana Derby (G2)
The showcase event at Fair Grounds might have lacked star power, but the race was quite deep, and getting a run at 1 3/16 miles under their belts can’t be a bad thing. Emerging Market, Pavlovian, and Golden Tempo were clear of their foes at the finish, but any prep race that can produce potentially four runners (Chip Honcho is probable) to Louisville has to be considered a very good tilt on the Road to the Kentucky Derby.
What a finish! 👀
