Saturday’s feature in a stakes-filled card at Delaware Park is the Oaks, for 3 year old fillies, which should be a good betting race.
MOST PROBABLE WINNER: 4-Joint Return (5-2)
Although she doesn’t have the best record in graded stakes company, Joint Return is better than most in this particular race. She’s 2-for-2 at the distance, won a stakes race her last time out here at Delaware, and has a jockey that has won multiple stakes races in the saddle. Trainer John Servis is having a very good 2014 and winning here will only add to his nice year. Bet her on top of exotics and and in multi-race bets.
VALUE HORSE: 1-Pixie Dust (10-1)
If you believe a filly can go from winning a $50k stakes race to winning a G2 while stretching out past 6 ½ furlongs for the first time, while making her fifth career start in a three-month span, then this horse is for you. She has the best speed ratings in the field, and although she is out-classed, she MAY be the surprise entry here on the rail. Her workouts have been excellent, and she may be progressing. Play her in exotics, and don’t forget to play her in a multi-race bet, just in case she shocks EVERYBODY. One of those horses that could finish first, or dead last. At 10-1, she has value.
OTHERS TO CONSIDER: 7-Vero Amore (5-1) and 8-Fortune Pearl (7-2)
Vero Amore has a maiden win, a win an allowance company, and that’s it. She also placed in the Black-Eyed Susan, and last raced in the G1 Acorn at Belmont. The problem there, is that she finished 12th, more than 27 lengths up the track. The good news, is that if you draw a line through the Acorn disaster, she has a pretty decent body of work, and good speed ratings. At 5-1, she could bring a price to exotics. Bet her underneath.
Fortune Pearl is a contender to win this race, now that Graham Motion has decided that she is not, in fact, a turf horse. Look at her races on the grass vs. on the dirt, and it’s night-and-day. In her 6 career races, she has failed to finish first or second only twice, one of which was a third-place finish in her last race, the G2 Black-Eyed Susan at Pimlico. Play her on top and underneath, and in multi-race bets.
