Player Quick Pick for 2/23/2014
by D.S. Williamson
After the brilliant display by Wildcat Red and General A Rod in the Fountain of Youth Stakes on Saturday - not to mention Onlyforyou's runaway romp in the Davona Dale and Reload sneaking up the rail in the Canadian Turf Hcp - horseplayers get another two stakes at Gulfstream to wager on!
Race 4 - $75,000 – Ten Palm Stakes, 1 mile over turf
5-Alaura Michelle – 4/1 – Pletcher and Castellano teamed up in this gal’s last to win a $100,000 optional claimer by a neck. She should get a great set-up in this and Castellano takes the call again.
10-Long Face – 5/1 – The Cristophe Clement trainee was the mare that lost to Alaura Michelle in that $100,000 claimer. She’d be the pick to turn the tables on her rival if not for the 10 post.
2-Byrama – 3/1 – Sure, she’s the class of the field, but the brilliant Bill Mott is only 18% winners with horses going first time for him. The Grade I Vanity victory was way back in last June. Pass on the short win odds, but, yep, she’s a must use.
Race 9 - $75,000 – Ladies Turf Sprint Stakes, 5 furlongs
1-Madame Giry – 5/1 – This mare out of Castledale has made over $436,400 lifetime. She runs for trainer Cam Gambolati who scores at a 35% clip in non-graded stakes races. He scores at a 42% clip with horses going third time off of a layoff.
7-Runway Ready – 5/2 – She won by 5 lengths in her last. But that race was a $50,000 state-bred allowance. So, she is stepping up in this. She’ll be quick, but it’s asking a lot for her to hold off Madame Giry.
6-Queen’s Award – 3/1 – She’s the class, but if Rosario gives her too much to do before the final turn, she’ll burn up a lot of tickets and might not hit the board.
