Player Quick Pick for 3/22/2014
by D.S. Williamson
Gulfstream’s feature on Saturday is the Grade 2 Inside Information. Before they run that race, is Race 7 where a 10 to 1 morning line shot looks like the perfect key horse in a wide open event.
Gulfstream Park 7 | 4:03 pm ET N1X Allowance for 3&up F&M going 5f (T)
5 – Jersey Blue Giant – Jamie Ness is one of the best trainers off the claim and that’s exactly the set up that horseplayers find with Jersey Blue Giant in the 7th at Gulfstream on Saturday. Ness wins 35% with horses running first time off of the claim. Sure, the accomplished trainer moves Jersey Blue Giant up from the $12,500 claiming level to this allowance, but that’s why we’re getting 10/1 on the morning line. If the Ness magic is in effect, horseplayers could cash big with this guy as a key in all three slots of the trifecta.
9 – Zippin On By – Zippin On By hasn’t run since last October but the works, at least on paper, have been outstanding and horses running first time for Breen win at a 25% clip. Then again, Breen only wins 11% with his horses going into races off of a layoff. The key for jockey Paco Lopez will be to put this guy right onto Drama Coach’s hip and hope to get by that one in the stretch.
3 – Drama Coach – Since switching trainers from Alfonso Balderas to Mike Maker, Drama Coach has produced a very interesting speed figure pattern. A great figure is often followed by a terrible fig. The four-year-old son of Montbrook should run a great fig if the pattern holds true on Saturday. Javier Castellano will make Drama Coach very tough to run down in the stretch, but 3/1 is a dream. 8 to 5 or even 7 to 5 is going to be more like it.
Gulfstream Park 10 | 5:36 pm ET G2 Inside Information for 4&up F&M going 7f
2 – My Pal Chrisy – There appears to be a ton of speed in this race. That should set things up for the second place finisher behind champion Groupie Doll in the Hurricane Bertie on Feb. 9. My Pal Chrisy has been expertly managed by trainer Martin Wolfson. She’s finished in the Top 3 in her last 10 races. This is one event, because of the race setup, that she could find herself getting her picture taken for.
3 – Centrique – If the speed runs itself out and there’s a very good chance that it will with Five Star Momma on the rail and the incredibly quick Zia Zia Zia entered, then the chalk will get first jump over My Pal Chrisy. Centrique is also trained by Martin Wolfson, like My Pal Chrisy. The difference is that Centrique gets the services of Javier Castellano. I’m not sure if anybody in the world. That’s right, the world, is riding better than Javier right now.
6-Heart Stealer – I wanted to throw in a non-Martin Wolfson trained horse into my write-up but the more I looked at the race, the more I realized that the other entrants have some bigger knocks against them than Heart Stealer does. Unless Zia Zia Zia lets Five Star Momma get an easy lead, the speed should run each other out of the top three. Wildcat Lilly would need a form reversal in order to contend and Toasting doesn’t appear to be good enough. Heart Stealer made a nice move in the Hurricane Bertie before flattening out. That was her first race off of a layoff. She should be much stronger on Saturday.
