Gulfstream Park

Two stakes races raced for really talented horses highlight Saturday’s card at Gulfstream Park.

Gulfstream Park race 7 | 4:31 pm ET Honey Rider for 3yo F 1-1/16 mi. (T)

10 – Little Michelle – Even though she’s stuck on the outside, this $75,000 stakes race sure looks like it’s setting up for Little Michelle. The daughter of Tiz Wonderful faces a field chockfull of speed. Jockey Jilver Chamalfi does well with turf horses and is patient enough to settle Little Michelle before making a move towards the top of the stretch. It could be tough for her to hold the 4/1 morning line odds in this, but even at 3 to 1, she’s the play on top in my eyes.

1 – Daring Kathy –  The morning line chalk figures to be part of the pace, which no doubt could compromise her chances, but since she breaks from post-position 1, she could very well have more in the tank than the other speedsters in this. If that’s the case, and if she is as good over the grass as her last indicates, she might win this by open lengths. The odds figure to drop mightily from the 3/1 morning line, though.

4 – Garnacha – On paper, it looks like this filly has no shot, but she is undefeated and she’s going to the lawn for the first time with a stunning turf pedigree since she is out of a Quiet American mare, La Dolce Vita, with Giant’s Causeway on top. If anything, she should relish the stretch out to a route and the grass. If she’s anywhere close to the morning line odds, a small win bet makes a lot of sense as does using her in all of your exotic wagers.

Gulfstream Park race 8 | 5:02 pm ET Big Drama for 3&up going 6.5f

9 – Majestic Cause – Jilver Chamalfi also rides the pick in Race 8, the Big Drama Stakes for $75,000. Trainer Martin Wolfson saddles this four-year-old Majestic Warrior colt that has a 2-2-1 record out of 5 lifetime races. Majestic Cause figures to get more than enough pace to run at and if the Gulfstream Park dirt is fair on Saturday, 6/1 odds will be a gift. He’s tractable meaning that if the pace is soft, that shouldn’t be the case but if it is, Chamalfi can get Majestic Cause close enough to make a run around the turn and in the stretch.

6 – City of Weston – By the time they break from the gate, City of Weston might be the favorite since the Antonio Sano trainee has won close to $400k and is one of those late running sprinter types that lives off of these $75,000 stakes races. City of Weston will be in a good position to make a run, just like Majestic Cause, if the pace is quick. If it isn’t, City of Weston can stay close as well, but the odds will be shorter than what we’ll get on Majestic Cause.

1 – Dadz Laugh – When he’s on, he’s about as fast any horse you’re likely to see running in a sprint race. The problem is that Edgar Prado aboard Risk Factor and Juan Leyva aboard Cajun Breeze figure to pressure him as soon as they break from the grate. Also, Dadz Laugh is 0 out of 5 with 3 second place finishes over the Gulfstream dirt. Be careful about playing him to win since the odds will make him an underlay.
