Player Quick Pick: Gulfstream for 5/18/2014
by D.S. Williamson
Gulfstream Park 6 | 4:00 pm ET Claiming (16) for 3&up going 1-1/16 mi.(T)
9 – Dynamic Boy – Dynamic Boy has a 6-4 record out of 29 lifetime races. The record includes a victory going 1 mile over Gulfstream’s turf at the $20K claiming level two back. The five-year-old gelding sired by Peace Rules failed miserably in his last at the $25K optional claiming level, but he definitely fits with these. There’s other speed but if jockey Abidel Jaen can get some separation early, or if the pace is soft, Dynamic Boy figures to make his presence felt in the stretch. Jaen will have to be careful to not hang Dynamic Boy out to dry around the first turn.
3 – Concert Stage – The likely chalk is almost guaranteed to go off at less than 2 to 1 betting odds to win this. The Giuseppe Iadisernia trainee finished third in the race where Dynamic Boy started back pedaling. They were much tougher in that race than they are in this event, meaning that Concert Stage is without a doubt the one to beat. He can run upfront; even take the lead if he must. One knock is that jockey Carlos D. Lugo is winning races at only 4% in 2014. The jockey switch might hurt Concert Stage’s chances in this.
8 – Volcano Run – Jockey Elvis Trujillo almost brought this one to a victory in his last, which was run at the exact same conditions as this race. Trujillo returns and Volcano Run is yet another tractable sort that could be close to the pace if it’s slow or come from the clouds if Dynamic Boy and the rest of the speedsters go at it too fast. The Congrats sired gelding is probably best to use underneath since he’s got 5 second place finishes and 2 third place finishes out of 11 races over the Gulfstream lawn.
Gulfstream Park 7 | 4:31 pm ET Optional Claiming (62) for 3&up going 1 mi.
1 – Majestic Cause – Jockey Jilver Chamalfi takes off of 2 to 1 shot Ooohs and Aaahs to ride this Martin Wolfson trainee that appears to be on the improve. The $700,000 Stonestreet Stables buy was terrific when finishing second at 6 to 1 odds at this level going a mile over the Gulfstream dirt in a race on February 9. Chamalfi must feel that he’s the one to ride and Majestic Cause figures to get a dream trip behind front-runners Ooohs and Aaahs and King’s Over. 3 to 1 odds will make this guy an overlay in Gulfstream’s seventh on Sunday.
3 – Ooohs and Aaahs – Wolfson also trains Ooohs and Aaahs. Even though Ooohs and Aaahs lost out on keeping Jilver Chamalfi to ride, the horse picks up a decent jockey in Elvis Trujillo. The gelded son of Seeking the Gold goes into this off of two terrific 4 furlong works. Trujillo will definitely get the lead once they break from the gate and if Juan Delgado aboard King’s Over wants to save something for the stretch, then Elvis might take this one gate-to-wire.
4 – King’s Over – There isn’t a horse as sharp in Race 7 at Gulfstream on Sunday as King’s Over. The Peter Walder trainee has three straight victories and a second place finish in his last four races. Walder is winning at 27% for the year and Delgado was aboard this one’s victory two back when he had a five length lead by the first call. Delgado’s going to have to make a decision, though, since Ooohs and Aaahs is just as fast in the early going as King’s Over. The wrong decision will no doubt cost King’s Over the race.
