Player Quick Pick: Gulfstream for 5/25/2014

Gulfstream Park 6 | 4:00 pm ET Claiming (25) for 3&up F&M going 1 1-16 mi. (T)
9 – Marie’s Music –Why would I suggest that horseplayers take a look at an entrant trained by an 0 for 82 on the year trainer that is 0 for 45 at Gulfstream Park to win any race, much less an extremely competitive affair going a route of ground over the turf? I have to pick Marie’s Music to win the sixth at Gulfstream Park on Sunday for the simple fact that she is the best horse in the race. Yes, trainer Ron Gaffney has been having a terrible 2014 and jockey Michael Ritvo is winning at only 7% on the year, but Marie’s Music takes a slight drop in class and she fits with these. I’ll be crossing my fingers and hoping that Gaffney gets his first victory of the year with her.
3 – Alguna –This four-year-old filly sired by Any Given Saturday lost by 15 lengths at this level in her last race. But before that she had run a pair of decent races. Those races were good enough for her to make her presence felt in this event if her last was just a fluke. Betting on her to win is definitely a gamble since her last could be a sign that her form is going south, but she switches jockeys to Edgard Zayas and that’s a big positive.
8 – Lady Dupree – Trainer Charles Carey drops this Belong to Me filly from the allowance ranks into this $25K claimer off of a decent third place finish going 1 mile and 40 yards at Tampa Bay Downs. The class relief might help because horseplayers should consider forgiving Lady Dupree for the horrible try two back in the slop. She also flashed some ability last year. The decent run in the allowance race is a sign that she might surprise in this.
Gulfstream Park 7 | 5:33 pm ET Claiming (50) for 3yo F going 6f
4 – Sunset Silhouette – The top three finishers from a highly-rated $50K race on April 18 at Gulfstream Park are back in this $50K race on Sunday. The third place finisher, Sunset Silhouette, could turn the tables on her two rivals since she picks up Zayas to ride and only finished 1.25 lengths behind the winner in that race. This will also be her third off of a layoff. It’s only a 16% winning move for trainer Larry Pilotti but that might be good enough. An awesome 3 furlong work on May 19 in :35.2 is also a positive.
2 – My Novena – The second place finisher in that April 18 race, My Novena, might be better in this event as well. She’s got enough early speed that jockey Abidel Jaen could really put likely betting second choice You Never Learn and hot jockey Kevin Krigger into a bad position as soon as they break from the gate. My Novena barely lost to Liberty Fuze in her last, her first against winners, and any improvement could put her into the winner’s circle.
5 – Liberty Fuze – The morning line chalk did put together back-to-back wins for trainer Lilian Klesaris who trains Liberty Fuze for her well-known husband, horseman Steve Klesaris. She can win her second straight, but there’s likely to be no value and this field is tough. Not only does both Susnet Silhouette and My Novena look likely to improve, but You Never Learn is going for her fourth straight win and keeps Kevin Krigger who is winning with 35% of his mounts.
