Player Quick Pick: Keeneland for 4/5/2014

Keeneland 8 | 4:49 pm ET Allowance for 3 yo going 7f (A)

Looking for a repeat of a scene in the Esquire TV show “Horseplayers” today, although with the odds being much less in our favor.

MOST PROBABLE WINNER:  10-Myositis Dan

If you haven’t seen the Esquire network’s show “Horseplayers”, you should really check it out.  In one episode, the players tab a 16-1 shot, who happens to have a name they have trouble pronouncing.  That horse, Myositis Dan, is the 2-1 morning line favorite in this race.  Myositis ( which is the medical term for soreness of the muscles) Dan broke his maiden last October 13 right here at Keeneland, going 6 ½ furlongs.  He last raced on March 1st at Gulfstream Park, going 7 furlongs, finishing second in a $75,000 optional claimer.  He’s the top pick here.

VALUE HORSE:  7-Artemus Coalmine

You have a hard time keeping a Mike Maker-trained Ramsey horse ridden by Joel Rosario down in recent history at Keeneland.  This colt is making his fourth career start (all have been on synthetic turf), but his first at Keeneland.  Although Rosario is an upgrade over Artemus Coalmine’s previous jock, it is his first mount on this horse, who’s making his Keeneland debut.  Play on top and bottom of exactas.  At 4-1 on the morning line, the value here is having him on top of a trifecta, or with the 10 in a straight exacta.

OTHERS TO CONSIDER:  3-Sorpresa d’Oro & 4- Rockford

Sorpresa d’Oro was terrible in his debut in Tampa on February 1st.  He finished 67 ½ lengths back.  That was without lasix.  On March 8, he was given lasix for the first time, and won.  It’s hard to gauge what a “base” speed figure would be for horses with two starts (one very poor, and one winner), but it’s obvious he needs the lasix which he gets today.  If he’s anything NEAR his last race, he can grab a piece of this.  At 8-1, this son of  Medaglia d’Oro can bring a price.

Rockford is dropping in class here, and represents some speed.  Of the “best of the rest”, he’s it.  At 4-1 on the morning line, you can use him to fill out trifectas and superfectas (if you play such a thing).  Be warned that if he is not near the front, he will probably not finish near the top.
