Player Quick Pick - Monmouth - 8/30/2014

August 30th, 2014

By D.S. Williamson

The stakes races are on Sunday and Monday, but that doesn’t mean that horseplayers can’t try and increase the bankroll on Saturday. Race 10 looks like the contest on Monmouth’s card on which horseplayers should consider a wager.

Monmouth Park 10 | 5:24 pm ET

Allowance (36) 3&UP F&M going 1-1/16 mi. (T)

6 – Munirah – 7/2 – After breaking her maiden at first asking, this Kitten’s Joy three-year-old filly ran great when stretching out to a route of ground over the turf at Delaware Park. Jockey Trevor McCarthy, who rode Munirah in that first race against winners, probably could have pushed her a bit more in the early stages, which is what he might do here since he takes the call again. She made a nice run in the stretch to close the gap from 3 lengths off to finish only 1.25 lengths behind in second. If McCarthy times the run just a bit better on Saturday, she’s probably the winner in this.

9 – Daddy’s Boo – 8/1– That was one heck of a ride that Nik Juarez gave Daddy’s Boo in the $20K maiden claiming score. Is this a step up in class? It absolutely is, but Daddy’s Boo ran a half in :45.4 in a 1 1/8 mile race over the Monmouth turf in the maiden score and still held on to win by 4 lengths. That’s impressive. Juarez figures to dare the other jockeys to push their steeds hard early in order to keep up. Will anybody have the guts? That’s doubtful because they’d absolutely hurt their own chances to win this. The speed of the speed in the tenth at Monmouth on Saturday has a serious shot at stealing it on the front end at what should be huge betting odds.

8 – Subpeona – 5/1 – The Claudio Gonzalez trainee might go off as the chalk in this if horseplayers don’t jump all over Munirah. Subpoeona is in very good form having finished second two back and third by a length in her last. But she hasn’t won in a while and is only 3 out of 37 in the win column. That makes her a tough equine to back in this for top honors, but it’s very difficult to keep her off of any exotic tickets since, even though she only has the 3 wins, she has 10 second place finishes and 7 third place finishes. Horseplayers should have Subpeona on all exotic tickets.
