Player Quick Pick: Monmouth for 5/11/2014

The promise of sunshine at the Jersey Shore on Sunday means that the racing should be fast at Monmouth Park!
Monmouth Park race 10 | 5:27 pm ET Optional Claiming (50) for 3yo going 6f
6 – Lieutenant Seany O – Monmouth is known for having an incredibly fast dirt strip that favors front-runners. But, horses were burning each other out on the front end during Saturday and if Sunday is anything like Saturday, this David Jacobsen trainee that was running on the West Coast for Eric Guillot earlier in the year should be in perfect position to overtake the speed. Lieutenant Seany O goes into this off of a terrific nose victory in a 7 furlong race at Belmont. Jockey Eddie Castro rides.
1 – Foreign Potential – The maiden score was smashing enough for this three-year-old colt sired by Notional to garner morning line favoritism in this. Foreign Potential finished up 6 furlongs in 1:11.4 and under wraps, but the maiden victory occurred at Philly Park. Also, he broke from post-position 8 in that victory and now gets the rail. He’s definitely a player in this, but Foreign Potential might get over bet due to the big time speed rating from his last.
2 – Tell Me a Joke – Trainer Eddie Plesa Jr. brings this guy over from Gulfstream Park to run in this race. Not to worry. Tell Me a Joke broke his maiden at first asking at Monmouth. Jockey Julian Pimentel figures to try and pin Foreign Potential to the rail as soon as they break from the gate. If that doesn’t work, there’s a good chance that Tell Me a Joke and the chalk hook up in a speed duel setting things up for the top choice.

7 – Acting on a Feelin – Jockey Paco Lopez has been riding very well lately. That just adds to the allure of Acting on a Feelin who improved mightily first time for trainer Bobby Dibona in a 1 1/16 mile turf race over at Gulfstream Park. Dibona wins 23% second time after the claim and Acting on a Feelin is dropping into this $20k claimer from a $35K claimer. Lopez should have her in position to make a run to the wire.
4 – Happy Voyage – Trainer Jorge Navarro wins 41% first time after the claim. That’s a legitimate 41% as well since Navarro has saddled 117 horses so far first time after the claim this year. That angle is going to be tough to beat in this and jockey Eddie Castro only helps, but horseplayers shouldn’t expect 3/1. In fact, 9/5 or less is more like it, making Happy Voyage the underlay in Race 11 at Monmouth on Sunday.
3 – Carey Princess – She’s had trouble wiring fields at 1 mile over the grass, meaning that the extra distance in this event definitely won’t help, but there’s a terrible lack of upfront speed in this and if she gets away, she could very well steal it. We have to assume that Paco Lopez on the top choice knows as well. Then again, it can be tough to get a horse to run in a style that it’s not use too. Consider only because of the lack of other true front running speed, but don’t get too excited yet. Carey Princess is 1 out of 29 in the win column.
