Player Quick Pick: Turfway Park 3/21/2015
Although almost everybody will be paying attention to Royal Son and Metaboss in the Spiral Stakes at Turfway Park on Saturday, the better race for horseplayers is the Bourbonette Oaks for three-year-old fillies. A full field is expected for the 1 mile Bourbonette where the favorite is 5/2 on the morning line.

7 – Sweet Success – 4/1 – Jockey Joel Rosario ensures that the price on Sweet Success drops to 3/1 or 5/2. Rosario’s on board a serious contender in the Bourbonette on Saturday. The only other horse in the race with early foot is Backflip. But Sweet Success has never run over an artificial surface. The trainer is George Arnold who definitely knows what he’s doing and speed is speed. If she gets an easy lead, she could be long gone over a surface that plays towards front runners at times. Still, there are many question marks. She’s a must use, but don’t even think about putting her on top if the odds drop as expected.
9 – Sharla Rae – 5/2 – Drayden Van Dyke is turning into one of the top riders in the United States. It’s only a matter of time before last year’s Eclipse Award for Outstanding Apprentice Jockey winner starts getting multiple mounts at multiple tracks. He’s got what could end up as the favorite in Sharla Rae in the Bourbonette at Turfway. Sharla Rae won her last race over Golden Gate’s artificial surface. She shouldn’t have any issue at Turfway. The race could set up for Sharla Rae, but the odds, because she’s trained by Doug O’Neil and looked so good in her last, might make it impossible to put her on top. Don’t leave out of the exotics, though.

2 – Walking the Kitten – 15/1 – It’s doubtful that gamblers let Walking the Kitten go off at the overlay odds of 15/1. Once the gates open, horseplayers should expect the Michael Maker trainee to be no better than 8 to 1. Maker is very good going turf to artificial. He also wins 26% when he puts blinkers on for the first time. Jockey Rafael Hernandez makes the trip and Walking the Kitten’s last race, a fifth place finish in a $75 optional claimer at Gulfstream, wasn’t bad based on time. If Maker sends her all the way out to Turfway Park for this, he must believe that he’s got a shot. She should get a great trip right behind front-runners Sweet Success and Backflip.
