Santa Anita - $30,000 Maiden Claiming, May 4, 2014
$30,000 Maiden Claiming for 3&Up F&M going about 1 mi
The key race on Sunday at Santa Anita is race 5, a $30,000 maiden claimer for fillies and mares. The race is the last leg of the early pick-4 and the pick-5, the second leg of the pick-6 and the first leg of the late pick-4 wager. TIZ BUT A DREAM is 3-1 on the morning line, co-second choice, but is worth a long look as jockey Drayden Van Dyke will try to steal the race on the front end. TIZ BUT A DREAM stretches out to a mile after two sprint races and has an even running style that suits the change. L X SUNRISE is the morning line favorite coming off a head defeat at this same level. The Kodiak Kowboy filly was claimed out of that start by Danny Velasquez and will be tough if she runs back to that race. MADAME FORBES is the other mare at 3-1 and is making her first start since June 2013. With Rafael Bejarano in the irons she is not likely to offer any value. The filly that gets the long shot bet is ROYAL SHAFT for trainer David Hofmans. Sired by Mineshaft and out of a Thunder Gulch mare, ROYAL SHAFT has every right to improve leaps and bounds around two turns. She was bet in her debut, has worked well since and picks up a good rider in Edwin Maldonado. Her 9-2 morning line may be an overlay.
