Santa Anita Sunday Pick 5 - Sunday, March 2, 2014

March 2nd, 2014

Santa Anita Race 1, Post Time 3:30 pm ET

Race 1: MISS AMERICAN PIE takes a massive drop in class for the Sunday opener, but it's her first start in nearly a year so we will try to beat her with CLEARLY CONFUSED and TEMPE. TEMPE is a new face to Southern California after making her career starts in Arizona, New Mexico and Minnesota. Not sure what she has been facing, but she has won half of her 12 career starts.

Race 2: More than likely we are off the turf again, but that should be fine for SQUARE DANCER, who finished second over a wet-fast race track last year and is worth a good bet here. FULL CONSENT finished third one level lower in January and the connections may have been looking for an off-the-turf race. SMART PRODUCTION began his career three-for-three in Arizona and Canada before finishing 80 lengths last in the Grade 3 Canadian Derby at Northlands Park. That race was over a sloppy track, but the son of Smart Strike is bred to handle the off going. BOTCH has three career wins, two coming over the dirt track at Emerald Downs.

Race 3: TIME FOR ANGIE has won three straight for trainer Walther Solis and looks for four as she tries to run down SOUTH SOUND and hold off class dropper LAROCCO. SENZA FINA fits two off her back-to-back wins in December and January.

Race 4: D'OBSESSION is going to try to wire the Race 4 field, a seven furlong sprint for $16,000 claimers, and may be single in the pick-5 wager. He ships from Arizona, but his only two wins came in Southern California last year when in the barn of Michael Pender. JUSTA GUSTA and SHOER HUGH will be following the favorite round the track and hope that one comes back to them late.

Race 5: HONEY RIDE is sitting on go in her third career start and first around two turns. The daughter of Candy Ride finished an even fifth in a five and one-half furlong sprint in mid-January and now gets the extra distance that she has wanted all along. CANDY EYE is the morning line, and likely post time favorite, off her neck defeat at this level, but she was 10-1 that day and couldn't get the job done up north at Golden Gate.
