With Pool 3 of the 2021 Kentucky Derby Future Wager now open, Brisnet.com editors James Scully and Vance Hanson have put their heads together and reached a consensus on an individual entry they both like. They also scanned the remaining options and have each picked out others they're excited about backing in the pool this week.
Consensus Pick: Kentucky Derby Future Wager Pool 3
#19 Risk Taking (15-1) has won two straight starts at 1 1/8 miles by open lengths, breaking his maiden and taking the Withers (G3) at Aqueduct. By Medaglia d'Oro, the late-running colt will need to keep improving against better runners, but Risk Taking appears to have an upward trajectory for Chad Brown.

#20 Roman Centurian (30-1) is my value play. A visually impressive maiden romper when stretching out to two turns in his second start, the Empire Maker colt jumped straight to stakes competition with a neck second in Robert B. Lewis (G3) at Santa Anita. He could be a good one for Simon Callaghan. #8 Greatest Honour (15-1) may get bet down from his morning line price, but the Holy Bull (G3) winner will be appealing at double-digit odds on Sunday afternoon. The Tapit colt could be a short price on Derby Day if he keeps moving forward in the final prep.

#1 Caddo River (12-1) was bet down to 13-1 (the third individual choice) in Pool 2 last month, which occurred the same weekend as his lopsided romp against overmatched rivals in the Smarty Jones S. at Oaklawn Park. With several Florida- and California-based colts having ascended since then, and with the Risen Star (G2) on Saturday likely to affect wagering as well, the hope is that the out-of-sight, out-of-mind scenario kicks in and we can get a piece of this Brad Cox trainee at a price that's at least several points higher. While the Smarty Jones wasn't much of a challenge, there's plenty of upside still here as he aims for next month's Rebel (G2).
