Scully's spot plays for Churchill Downs on May 8

Saturday marks the third weekend of live racing at Churchill Downs this season. The $110,000 Mamzelle Overnight S., a five-furlong turf affair for three-year-old fillies, serves as the featured event, and it’s one of six races that offer a six-figure purse on the 11-race program.

I will give my thoughts on the Mamzelle, and tab some horses of interest on the undercard.

Race 10: Mamzelle S.

Wesley Ward has a strong hand, with three contenders in the 13-horse field, and we’ll see if he runs all of them.

#4 Wink will take some beating if she starts. The Midshipman filly blitzed rivals in a gate-to-wire win, when she returned off the bench in the March 20 Melody of Colors S. at Gulfstream Park, to improve her record to 3-1-0 from four starts, and she appears to be the speed of the speed.

#11 Lady Edith will be on my multi-race tickets. Listed at 12-1, the Tommy Drury-trained chestnut won on debut in a turf sprint last year and followed with a fifth against stakes opponents. Lady Edith recorded a decent fourth, when she opened her sophomore season in a salty Fair Grounds turf allowance, and she exits a visually impressive win over Turfway’s Tapeta, where she drew away to a 5 1/4-length score over entry-level allowance foes. She is a candidate to keep advancing, and Lady Edith should establish a favorable stalk-and-pounce trip from an outside post Saturday.

Race 5

Fillies and mares will sprint 6 1/2 furlongs in this lucrative maiden special weight, and #3 Fine Cotton will make her second appearance, after she ran into a buzzsaw, Caramel Swirl, in her debut at Keeneland.

Trainer Neil Pessin, who wins at an 18% clip with second-time starters, is not known for having firsters ready for their best, and Fine Cotton showed good speed from the break, set the pace, and weakened to fifth in the final furlongs.

The Curlin filly should be formidable on the front end the second time around.

Race 6

Bred to thrive on grass, #9 Maybe Later will try turf in a 1 1/8-mile maiden special weight.

The gray Not This Time filly hails from a classy female family, and she counts Grade 3-placed turf runner Sutton’s Smile as a half-sibling.

Maybe Later posted a solid runner-up effort when she tried two turns in her second start, and she experienced a rough trip at Keeneland last time out, when she offered a solid middle move and came up a little short.

I like her progressing form, and Maybe Later does not appear to have the toughest competition in this spot. She is listed at an appealing 10-1 on the morning line.

Race 8

A full field of three-year-old fillies is set for this entry-level allowance at 1 1/16 miles on turf, and #3 Office Party appears set for an improved showing, after a less-than-favorable trip in her first attempt against winners.

By Distorted Humor, the well-bred chestnut is out of the Grade 1-winning turf mare Room Service, and Office Party stamped herself as one to watch when she captured a Fair Grounds turf maiden race two starts back.

Office Party will get a jockey switch to Colby Hernandez, who was up for her maiden win and won four races opening week at Churchill, and I like the filly in a wide-open affair.
