Sophomores Highlight Harrington Weeknight Cards
Both the Monday and Tuesday evening cards at Harrington Raceway in Delaware featured eliminations for the Delaware Standardbred Breeders Fund as the various sophomore pacing colts and gelding on Monday and the fillies on Tuesday were looking to secure a berth in their respective $100,000 DSBF finals on the July 27 Governor's Day card.
Tuesday evening the trainer-driver tandem of Jim King, Jr. and Victor Kirby perhaps earned top billing by sweeping the trio of DSBF elims. In the first split, Lillisbagsrpacked lived up to her billing as the 1-2 favorite when she scored in 1:55.1 and several races later Logan's Girl prevailed as the 1-5 choice in 1:55. In the last DSBF elim, Spanish Dream posted a mild 9-2 upset when he overhauled 2-5 choice Free Flight Fran to score by a nose in 1:55.1.
On Monday evening at Dover, Kirby won five races including an early conditioned event with Allwillworkout in 1:52.4 and the Delaware Special with 16-1 outsider I'm Supersonic A in 1:54.2. He won one of the three DSBF elims for sophomore pacing colts with Automatic Dragon in 1:54, but "Team Teague" won the other two as Daiymir (Montrell Teague) edged Bags To Riches (Tim Tetrick) by a head in 1:53.4 and Ain't It Fun (Teague) overhauled 1-2 choice James Isaac in 1:56.2.
Kirby and Teague could both be in for decent paydays on the lucrative Governor's Day card, although neither is guaranteed to win a DSBF final with one of the elim winners. Kirby might opt to wait for the post position draw before choosing Lillisbagsrpacked, Logan's Girl or Spanish Dream, while Teague will likely opt for Daiymir even if he draws outside of Ain't It Fun. Both Free Flight Fran, the beaten favorite in her split on Tuesday, and Bags To Riches, a sharp second to Daiymir on Monday, both loom serious contenders for their respective finals on Governor's Day.
