Sunday Card Highlights the Ladies
Sunday nights card at Rosecroft Raceway in Maryland was highlighted by a handful of older pacers trained by female conditioners.
In the opening race on the card, Stimulus Spending (Jared Moyer) gained command before reaching the opener in 27.2 and was never threatened thereafter en route to a seven-length score in 1:54.2 in a non-winners of $1,000 last five starts class. A seven-year-old I Am A Fool gelding trained by Arlene Cameron for his owner-driver, Stimulus Spending recorded his first win in five starts at the meet after opening the campaign at Woodbine Race Course in Canada.
One race later, Pekoe Fashion (Brian Burton) capped the early ladies night daily double by rallying from well off the pace and widest of all to capture a non-winners of $2500 last five starts class for trotters. An eight-year-old Broadway Hall stallion trained by Judith Welty for owner Kelley Rogers, Pekoe Fashion notched his first win in five starts this year after stopping the timer in 1:57.2.
Then just before the midway point of the program, BP Burner (William Carter) delivered a similar performance when he rallied from last with three-eighths remaining to capture a non-winners of $2500 last five starts class for pacers. A five-year-old Brian P gelding trained by Betsy Brown, BP Burner benefited from the slight drop in class to record his first win in five starts this year after prevailing in 1:53.4 to equal his lifetime mark.
Then several races after McHenry (Bret Brittingham) captured the featured $10,000 Open Handicap in 1:52.3 for his second win in four tries at the meet, Go Big Spinder (Allan Davis) notched his first win of the season in his local debut when he brushed to command down the backside and held safe Rockin Glory (Roger Plante, Jr.) to score in 1:52.
A six-year-old No Spin Zone stallion owned, bred and trained by petite blacksmith Virginia "Leigh" Louthan, Go Big Spinder recorded his first win in eight starts this year and now sports 14 wins and $137,000 banked from 78 career tries. His sharp score gave female conditioners a training grand slam on the card on a night when only 21 of the 106 starters were trained by women.
