G3 Sunland Derby for 3yo going 1-1/8 mi
Trainer Bob Baffert holds a pair of aces in the Grade 3 Sunland Derby with MIDNIGHT HAWK and CHITU, two colts that have been running against the best three-year-olds in Southern California. MIDNIGHT HAWK may have more talent than his stable mate, but CHITU may be the horse to bet at longer odds. CHITU has two wins and one second in three career starts and the second place finish was in the Robert B. Lewis where MIDNIGHT HAWK finished third. The Sunland strip can be very speed friendly on these big days and that will help both favorites. Another speed favoring track is Gulfstream Park and trainer Todd Pletcher brings two of his three-year-olds COMMISSIONER and GLOBAL STRIKE from the Miami track. The two ran on the same day one month ago with COMMISSIONER in the Fountain of Youth and GLOBAL STRIKE in an allowance race. If you were not on the lead that day, you had no chance so perhaps COMMISSIONER deserves a break as he was trying to rally from over five lengths back. If the Sunland track is fair, COMMISSIONER can get the job done.
