Texas racing resumes with three-month extension

After being shut down on Tuesday, the Texas Racing Commission (TRC) has received the funding allowing tracks in the state to reopen for live racing and simulcast wagering. However, the three-month extension remains a temporary fix for Thoroughbred and Quarter-Horse tracks in the state.

“We are glad to see our ability to operate our business restored,” Sam Houston Race Park President Andrea Young said. “However, we remain extremely concerned with both the process and the extremely short period of funding.

“Like any business, we need to be able to plan farther out than three months.”

On Tuesday evening, the office of Texas Lt. Governor Dan Patrick announced that the Senate legislative Budget Board had reached an agreement to extend temporary funding for the TRC.

Retama Park, which is currently conducting live Thoroughbred racing, released the following statement:

“On behalf of our 250 team members, we are pleased to return to business as usual and are hopeful for a long-term solution to this issue and one that will protect the Texas racing industry and the hard-working individuals it employs.”
