Edited Press Release

Winner of the 2014 Belmont Stakes, Tonalist has been retired and will stand the 2016 season at Lane’s End Farm in Versailles, Kentucky.

A four-time Grade 1 winner, Tonalist earned $3,647,000 from a 16-7-4-2 career record. The 4-year-old colt won a total of six graded stakes from distances of a mile to 1 ½ mile.

A son of leading sire Tapit, Tonalist hails from the Pleasant Colony mare Settling Mist and descends from the immediate female family of 2011 Horse of the Year Havre de Grace and multiple Grade 1 winner Riskaverse.

The bay Kentucky-bred registered his first stakes victory in the Peter Pan (G2) before capturing the third leg of the Triple Crown, the 1 ½-mile Belmont Stakes, four weeks later. He placed in the Jim Dandy (G2) and Travers (G1) before winning the prestigious Jockey Club Gold Cup (G1) in his penultimate start as a 3-year-old.

Conditioned by Christophe Clement, Tonalist registered BRIS Speed ratings as high as 110 during an outstanding 2015 campaign. Along with a repeat victory in the Jockey Club Gold Cup, he produced wins in the Cigar Mile (G1) and Westchester (G3) and also placed in the Metropolitan H. (G1), Whitney (G1) and Suburban (G2).

“Tapit is the most important stallion in America and Tonalist is his best son,” Lane’s End’s Will Farish said. “Tonalist is his only Grade 1-winning son at a mile and a quarter, from a tremendous female family. He’s exactly the kind of stallion we want to stand.”

We’re in the business of classic Thoroughbreds and he certainly fits our program,” Bill Farish added. “A.P. Indy, Lemon Drop Kid, Union Rags won races like the Belmont and Gold Cup and we are confident Tonalist will continue that success.”

“I want to thank Christophe Clement and his team for their great work,” owner Robert S. Evans said. “This horse retired sound and only ran on Lasix. What he's been able to accomplish is a great testament to the horsemanship of Christophe. I’m very excited to partner with Lane’s End on the next stage of this horse’s career. Tonalist will be a great fit there. They have an excellent reputation of making racehorses like him into prolific stallions.”

Tonalist will stand for $40,000 fee and be available for inspection at Lane’s End by appointment. Please call Chance Timm, Jill McCully or Levana Capria for more information at (859) 873-7300.
