Tuesday Harness Preview for 5/6/2014
by Ted Black
To a certain extent the Tuesday cards at both Harrington Raceway in Delaware and Rosecroft Raceway in Maryland will have plenty in common as both feature the top pacing fillies and mares on the circuit at each track. But both will also offer other quality, playable events as well.
In the second race at Harrington on Tuesday, a non-winners of $2501 last five class for pacing fillies and mares, look for If Only You Knew to regain her winning ways while starting from the coveted rail. Last week she failed to hit the board while starting from post seven against tougher, but she won this class two starts back and should upset Damsel In A Dress, who was 4-5 last week.
Two races later on the card in a non-winners of $8501 last five class for pacing mares, give Grandview Hanover and Outrageousdelight N good chances to finish-one two. Grandview Hanover won this class last week and draws the rail tonight, while Outrageousdelight N finished third after a first over trip against tougher last week.
Both of those mares should also be decent prices since BJ's Sweetheart, who has won her last two starts as the odds-on choice against lesser at Rosecroft, returns to the Delaware half-miler after missing a week and drawing the outside seven post. BJ's Sweetheart has plenty of gate speed and is in peak form, but the week off by result in her being a little short in the lane.
Then two races later in the sixth, the Filly-Mare Open, look for Jeremes Sweetheart to prevail in the top class in her local debut. One of the upper echelon members of her gait and gender at the Dover Downs meet where she won the F-M Open four times, Jeremes Sweetheart raced at Harrah's Philadelphia in her last two outings against much tougher and should get the job done here despite the outside draw.
Of course, defending F-M Open champ Scootin For Joy will have plenty to say about that following her four-length score in 1:55.2 one week ago. She boasts a solid 5-1-1 slate from seven starts this year, but she spent much of the Dover Downs meet in lifetime conditions for pacing mares. The presence of Jeremes Sweetheart will present a genuine acid test.
Several races later in a claiming event for older male pacers, all eyes will be on Arc De Triumph as he seeks his sixth straight. Claimed three starts back for $10,000 by trainer Kasey Shahan, Arc De Triumph has won two straight for her at the $15,000 level and seeks his third straight in new barn and sixth straight overall.
Two races later in the 13th, a non-winners of $4501 last five event for pacing fillies and mares, look for Sucha Bad Girl and Itz Cherry Ripe N to complete the exacta. Sucha Bad Girl finished seventh from post seven last week off a three-week break, but draws the rail this evening. Itz Cherry Ripe N has loads of back class and is worth backing at 3-2 despite being winless from eight starts this year. Classy, aged mare owns 34-44-24 slate and $534,000 bankroll from 198 starts.
At Rosecroft Raceway on Tuesday, a trio of races for pacers deserve close attention and all three could provide overlay plays.
In the second, the Filly-Mare Open, look for Together Again N (Tony Morgan) and Megs Breeze (Jonathan Roberts) to settle the issue late. Last week Megs Breeze rebounded from her first setback of the campaign to notch her fifth win in six starts in the top class for owner-trainer William "Bib" Roberts of local Trapeze and Yankee Co-Ed fame. Together N finished third last week as the 8-5 choice after posting the upset two weeks ago and merits respect again.
Several races later in the eighth, the Open for older boys, give Varsity Hanover a good chance to notch his first victory in the top class. The Modern Art gelding has been second twice and third once in the Open for owner-trainer James Whalen, Jr. of Crumpton and should finally get to the winner's circle this evening with a favorable draw. But the "Crumpton Crusher" is no cinch.
Fearless Diablo has won his last two starts over the track while facing conditioned rivals for trainer Dylan Davis, while Shady Breeze displayed plenty of back form two weeks ago when he cruised home four lengths clear in 1:50.4 for owner-trainer Judy Welty. Having missed a week might prove telling in this event, however.
Then one race later in the ninth, a non-winners of $5100 last five class, look for either Booze Cruzin or Lislea Pat to prevail. Booze Cruzin finally gets some class relief after two starts in the Open and two others at Harrah's Philadelphia. He won two straight races over this strip on March 18 and March 25 against lesser, but can handle the jump into this level.
Lislea Pat finished third and fifth in two tries in the Open and also gets a class break for owner Clarissa Caughlin. He won three starts back against similar company and merits respect at this level. Osceola Gold has won six in a row for owner-trainer Jeannemarie Kurowski while facing $7500-$8000 claimers. He drops in for a $10,000 tag this evening, draws the eight hole and faces a tough group.
