Turfway Park is celebrating the weekend with a massive $109,648 carryover up for grabs in Saturday’s 50-cent Late Pick 5.
The carryover adds extra betting value to an excellent card featuring large and competitive fields.
Turfway Park: Race 6: $109,648 Pick 5 carryover (8:25 p.m. ET)
Before scratches, the five legs of the Pick 5 have drawn a combined 66 horses (averaging 13.2 per race), which works out to 384,160 possible outcomes. Even if you remove eight also-eligible entrants from consideration, there are 58 horses (averaging 11.6 per race) and 207,360 possible outcomes, still huge numbers for a Pick 5.
The feature race in the sequence is Race 9, the $125,000 Dust Commander S. for older horses racing 1 1/16 miles on Tapeta. With only 10 entries, it features the smallest field in the Pick 5 sequence, and morning-line favorite #4 Encino (6-5) looms as a viable single candidate for budget-conscious bettors.
Best single: Race 9, #4 Encino (6-5)
Encino is a force to reckon with on Tapeta. He hasn’t missed the exacta in six starts over the synthetic surfaces at Turfway Park and Presque Isle Downs. Back in 2024, he rallied from midfield to win the 1 1/16-mile John Battaglia Memorial at Turfway. Then in the spring of 2025, he returned to this track to finish second by one length in the 1 1/8-mile Kentucky Cup Classic (G3), earning a career-best 106 Brisnet Speed rating.

Most recently, Encino started in the one-mile Prairie Bayou S. at Turfway. He led all the way and clocked his final quarter-mile in a quick :24.04 to win by 1 1/2 lengths, earning a 93 Brisnet Speed rating.

None of the other Dust Commander entrants have earned a Brisnet Speed rating higher than 93 over a synthetic track. Across all racing surfaces, none have posted a number higher than 103. These numbers suggest Encino’s speed and proven affinity for Tapeta will make him difficult to defeat.
Cementing Encino as a compelling single candidate are strong jockey and trainer stats. Trainer Brad Cox has gone 7-for-21 (33%) at Turfway since the start of the year, while jockey Luan Machado has won at a 24% rate teaming up with Cox over the last two months.
In addition to singling Encino in the Pick 5, we recommend betting him over #7 Sugoi (15-1) in an exacta. Sugoi boasts a 13-5-2-1 record at Turfway and enters off a win in a 1 1/4-mile $25,000 allowance optional claimer over this track.
