Handicapper J. Keeler Johnson shares horses to play in a trio of Saturday carryovers at Colonial Downs, Del Mar, and Ellis Park.
Ellis Park, Race 1: $2,606 Super High 5 carryover (12:50 p.m. ET)
The Saturday opener at Ellis Park features a $2,606 Super High 5 carryover.
Race 1 is a $30,000 maiden claimer taking place over six furlongs on dirt. There are many viable contenders in the eight-horse field. One of the fastest entrants from a Brisnet Speed rating perspective is #4 Skynet (6-1), who posted an 85 when finishing second over this course, distance, and class level on July 20. That rating is the highest sprinting number posted by any horse entered in Race 1.
Skynet’s runner-up finish marked his first start in three months. If he improves in his second start back, he can deliver victory at enticing odds. Don’t leave him off your tickets.

Colonial Downs, Race 5: $6,618 Pick 6 carryover (2:32 p.m. ET)
If you’re looking for a single to build tickets around in the $6,618 Pick 6 carryover at Colonial Downs, check out #6 Gigante (6-5) in Race 5, the Find S. for Virginia/Maryland-bred and/or Virginia/Maryland-sired horses racing 1 1/16 miles on turf.
Since returning from a layoff last fall, Gigante has won a couple of listed stakes at Fair Grounds and recorded top-three finishes in the Muniz Memorial Classic (G2) and River City (G3). Dropping in class at Colonial Downs should hand Gigante a comfortable victory under red-hot jockey Paco Lopez, a 27% winner at Colonial this meet.
Del Mar, Race 5: $79,373 Pick 6 carryover (7:03 p.m. ET)
The feature event in Del Mar’s lucrative $79,373 Pick 6 carryover is Race 8, the $300,000 Del Mar Oaks (G1) for sophomore fillies racing 1 1/8 miles on turf.
#10 Thought Process (8-5) is the clear favorite. She’s 5-for-6 in California, with her lone defeat coming against fierce competition in last year’s Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf (G1). This year, she’s 2-for-2, opening the year with a blowout allowance win before adding Del Mar’s San Clemente H. (G2) to her record.
Thought Process looks like a standout among the California-based fillies, but a Midwest raider is also worth including on Pick 6 tickets. #5 Lush Lips (3-1) finished second to the accomplished Nitrogen in the Florida Oaks (G3) and Edgewood (G2) before dominating the Tepin S. by 3 3/4 lengths. She’s run faster than Thought Process on the Brisnet Speed rating scale and has a big chance to star in her West Coast debut.
Good luck!
