Carryovers: Ellis Park’s Super High 5, Gulfstream’s mandatory-payout Pick 6

August 3rd, 2025

Handicapper J. Keeler Johnson shares horses to bet in a pair of Sunday carryovers at Ellis Park and Gulfstream Park.

Ellis Park, Race 1: $1,839 Super High 5 carryover (12:50 p.m. ET)

Sunday’s opening race at Ellis Park is a $40,000 starter optional claimer for fillies and mares sprinting 6 1/2 furlongs on dirt. If you can select the top five finishers in order, you can win a share of a $1,839 carryover in the $1 Super High 5.

#6 De’ Ans Eighty (5-2) and #5 Punchy Girl (7-2) are logical favorites. Punchy Girl beat De’ Ans Eighty by 1 3/4 lengths when taking a $20,000 starter allowance on May 29 at Churchill Downs. But De’ Ans Eighty turned the tables by a head when they ran 2-3 in a similar race on June 18. Both mares bring sharp Brisnet Speed ratings to the table and boast big chances to finish in the top three.

But #3 Arrasou (5-1) is also worth a long look. She’s wired her last two starts at Horseshoe Indianapolis, taking an allowance by eight lengths and a $25,000 claimer by 5 1/4 lengths. Don’t be surprised if this speedy five-year-old hangs around for a trifecta finish at Ellis Park.

Gulfstream Park, Race 5: $110,621 Pick 6 mandatory payout (2:57 p.m. ET)

A $110,621 jackpot carryover in Gulfstream Park’s Rainbow Pick 6 is slated to be paid out in mandatory fashion on Sunday. The final pool for the 20-cent wager could reach the $1.5 million range.

Looking for a single to build tickets around? Try #4 Coach Kain (3-1) in Race 6, a maiden special weight for two-year-olds racing one mile on turf.

Coach Kain showed promise when debuting in a 7 1/2-furlong turf test over this course and class level on June 29. After rating in eighth place, he rallied steadily to finish second with an 80 Brisnet Speed rating equal to the par winning number for Sunday’s conditions.

Coach Kain has already defeated a few of the rivals he’ll face on Sunday, and since none of the first-time starters appear especially likely to win on debut, there’s a wide-open path for Coach Kain to graduate in his second start. It helps that Hall of Fame trainer Mark Casse wins at a solid 19% rate with second-time starters.

Good luck!
