Woodbine: Race 2: $47,920 Pick 5 carryover (1:30 p.m. ET)

One of the betting highlights of Saturday’s card at Woodbine is the $47,920 USD ($66,130 CAD) carryover up for grabs in the 20-cent Early Pick 5.

The opening leg of the sequence is Race 2, a $40,000 maiden optional claimer taking place over five furlongs on turf. We recommend taking a stand and singling #4 Howsitgoinowen (3-1), the third choice on the morning line, to kick off your tickets.

Whereas many of the entrants (including the two favorites) are untested on turf, Howsitgoinowen ran strongly in a grass race at this distance and class level on July 11. He set fast fractions of :21.48 and :44.18, in the process opening up a five-length lead, but tired late to finish second by 1 1/2 lengths.

Even in defeat, Howsitgoinowen earned a respectable 75 Brisnet Speed rating. He’s drawn outside of key pace rival #1 Lohan (9-5), so if Howsitgoinowen is able to set or press a more relaxed pace in his second try at this class level, he can spring a mild upset.

Colonial Downs: Race 5: $2,269 Pick 6 carryover (2:37 p.m. ET)

The ever-elusive 50-cent “Old Dominion 6” Pick 6 at Colonial Downs went unsolved on Friday, yielding a $2,269 carryover for Saturday’s card.

A competitive series of races is on the agenda, but bettors looking for a single to build tickets around should consider #8 Noble Jon (2-1) as a viable option in Race 7, a $10,000 claimer.

Although 11 horses have entered the 5 1/2-furlong turf sprint, Noble Jon is a formidable favorite. He’s won his last two starts dashing 5 1/2 furlongs on turf, taking a $12,500 starter optional claimer at Laurel Park and a $10,000 claimer at Colonial Downs. The latter victory came by 2 1/2 lengths.

With back-to-back 79 Brisnet Speed ratings under his belt, Noble Jon appears fast enough to snag a third straight win. #1 Bouncer (4-1) has earned high ratings in recent starts, but he’s been competing primarily on dirt and hasn’t cracked the trifecta in three starts on turf, suggesting Noble Jon is the horse to beat over Saturday’s racing surface.
