The betting highlight of Saturday’s card at Fair Grounds is a $24,712 carryover in the 50-cent Late Pick 5.
Five-figure, non-jackpot Pick 5 carryovers don’t come along every day, so you won’t want to miss this opportunity.

Fair Grounds: Race 6: $24,712 Pick 5 carryover (4:15 p.m. ET)
The Late Pick 5 spans Race 6 through Race 10. Before scratches, the five races contain 55 horses (averaging 11 per race), which works out to 150,579 possible outcomes. However, five of the entrants are also-eligibles, so after scratches the Pick 5 sequence should simplify quite a bit.
That may prove especially true if rain prompts Saturday’s turf races to be switched to dirt. There are thunderstorms in the forecast for Fair Grounds, so keep a close eye on race-day changes for Race 7 and Race 9, the two grass events in the Pick 5 sequence.
Best single: Race 10: #1 Shot Gun Shack (4-5)
If you’re looking for a single to build tickets around, we recommend Shot Gun Shack, the heavy morning-line favorite to prevail in Race 10.
Race 10 is a $10,000 maiden claimer for Louisiana-breds sprinting 5 1/2 furlongs on dirt. This is the easiest class level Shot Gun Shack has ever tackled. He’s spent his first five starts competing in maiden special weights, including four for Louisiana-breds, and in those state-restricted races he finished second, fourth, third, and second.
On three occasions, Shot Gun Shack has earned Brisnet Speed ratings in the 70-78 range. Those exceed the par winning number (69) for Race 10’s conditions, and they’re also three of the highest numbers belonging to any of the horses entered in Race 10. Only one of Shot Gun Shack’s rivals, #9 Temple of Peace (10-1), has cracked the 70 plateau, but she hasn’t done so in 2026 or 2025.
In short, dropping down the class ladder should be all Shot Gun Shack needs to secure his first victory. Keep in mind, trainer Bret Calhoun wins at a lofty 27% rate with horses dropping from maiden special weight into maiden claiming company. Bettors can feel confident singling Shot Gun Shack at a short price.
Good luck!
