Best Bets and Quick Picks

Belmont Park: Race 1: Maiden Special Weight (seven furlongs on dirt, 11:40 a.m. ET)

#3 Legal Gambit (3-1) has only raced once. In a 6 1/2-furlong maiden special weight at Saratoga in August 2025, he finished a respectable third behind future champion two-year-old male Ted Noffey.

Legal Gambit has put together an encouraging work tab in preparation for his second start. Trainer Chad Brown wins at a 23% rate with horses returning from layoffs of 90 days or more, so let’s try betting Legal Gambit to win and keying him over #6 Originality (2-1) in an exacta.

Selections

  • #3 Legal Gambit (3-1)
  • #6 Originality (2-1)
  • #5 Sir Duke (8-5)

Wagers

  • $24 to win on #3 Legal Gambit
  • $6 Exacta: 3 with 6
    Total: $30

Horseshoe Indianapolis: Race 4: Maiden Special Weight (5 1/2 furlongs on dirt, 12:21 p.m. ET)

#2 Fireball Mail (5-1) is an unraced two-year-old from the barn of Anthony Cunningham, who wins at a lofty 26% rate with horses debuting at the maiden special weight level.

Fireball Mail’s dam, Spousal Privilege, has foaled a trio of Horseshoe Indianapolis stakes winners, so Fireball Mail has the pedigree to develop into a classy competitor at this track. We’ll bet him to win and play him over #1 Victory On Ice (4-5) in an exacta.

Selections

  • #2 Fireball Mail (5-1)
  • #1 Victory On Ice (4-5)
  • #5 Red Clay Runaway (9-2)

Wagers

  • $15 to win on #2 Fireball Mail
  • $15 Exacta: 2 with 1
    Total: $30

Santa Anita: Race 9: Maiden Special Weight (one mile on turf, 8:15 p.m. ET)

#8 Mackinaw (5-1) is an intriguing first-time starter from the barn of Hall of Fame trainer Richard Mandella. She’s shown excellent speed in the mornings at Santa Anita, breezing five furlongs in the bullet times of :58 and :58 4/5. But as a daughter of Justify out of a mare by Curlin, she’s bred to relish debuting over one mile.

At 5-1, Mackinaw is worthy of a win bet.

Selections

  • #8 Mackinaw (5-1)
  • #6 Federation (5-2)
  • #5 Character (5-1)

Wagers

  • $25 to win on #8 Mackinaw

Carryover Watch

Belmont Park: Race 5: $18,380 Pick 6 carryover (2:00 p.m. ET)

Even if you’re busy playing the Breeders’ Cup at Keeneland, you may want to check out the Friday card at Belmont Park, which features an $18,380 carryover in the $1 Pick 6.

Before scratches, the Pick 6 sequence contains 62 horses (averaging about 10.3 per race) and 1,067,220 possible outcomes. Chances are, anyone who assembles a winning ticket will catch a nice payoff.

Of course, a Pick 6 with so many horses and possible outcomes can be expensive to play. If you need a single to reduce costs and simplify ticket construction, one logical option is #7 Donegal Luster (8-5) in Race 7, a maiden special weight for two-year-olds dashing six furlongs over the main track.

Best single: #7 Donegal Luster (8-5)

Purchased for $300,000 as a yearling, Donegal Luster is a well-bred son of Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile (G1) winner City of Light out of a mare by three-time leading sire Tapit.

Donegal Luster debuted on Sept. 30 in a six-furlong maiden special weight over the Belmont dirt. He broke slowly in a seven-horse field, but recovered to race in midfield and ultimately stayed on to finish third by four lengths.

Even in defeat, Donegal Luster earned a respectable 85 Brisnet Speed rating. That’s the highest number belonging to any horse entered in Race 7. None of the other experienced runners have posted a rating higher than 76.

Hall of Fame trainer Todd Pletcher wins at a solid 19% rate with second-time starters, so there’s a chance Donegal Luster will step forward while sticking to the same track, distance, and class level as his first start. A better break might be all he needs to graduate at a short price.

Some bettors may wish to include first-time starter #3 Bubble Market (4-1) as backup, since he enters off a quick five-furlong workout from the Belmont Park starting gate for trainer George Weaver, who wins at a 21% rate with first-time starters. But Bubble Market’s overall work tab is a little light, so the fact Donegal Luster already has racing experience (and has run one reasonably fast race) suggests he’s the more likely winner.

Good luck!
