Best Bets and Quick Picks

Oaklawn Park: Race 9: Matron S. (six furlongs on dirt, 5:48 p.m. ET)

#6 Haulin Ice (5-2) rarely misfires and has won a bevy of stakes, including a couple of Grade 3s. Last time out, she smashed the six-furlong Downthedustyroad Breeders’ S. at Oaklawn by 11 3/4 lengths, stopping the clock in a blazing 1:08.75 to earn a 102 Brisnet Speed rating.

Haulin Ice appears well-spotted to snag another stakes win in the Matron, a race she won by five lengths in 2025. A win bet is in order, along with an exacta using #5 Me and Molly McGee (3-1) for second place.

Selections

  • #6 Haulin Ice (5-2)
  • #5 Me and Molly McGee (3-1)
  • #8 Evanescence (12-1)

Wagers

  • $20 Exacta: 6 with 5

Turfway Park: Race 1: $7,500 Maiden Claiming (one mile on Tapeta, 5:55 p.m. ET)

#9 Dokkodo (7-2) debuted with a promising performance over this track, distance, and class level on Feb. 21. After settling about five lengths off the pace in fourth place, he rallied to finish second, beaten only one length while earning a 76 Brisnet Speed rating three points higher than the par winning number (73) for Friday’s conditions.

Dokkodo is trained by William D. Cowans, who wins at a lofty 63% rate with horses running long for the second time. Let’s place a win bet on Dokkodo.

Selections

  • #9 Dokkodo (7-2)
  • #11 Nehalem (4-1)
  • #7 Iknowyoucanwait (5-1)

Wagers

  • $25 to win on #9 Dokkodo

Turfway Park: Race 5: Maiden Special Weight (6 1/2 furlongs on Tapeta, 7:55 p.m. ET)

#2 Morana (9-2) looks like a promising prospect for trainer Cherie DeVaux. The unraced daughter of Frosted is a half-sister to Deterministic, an early-maturing and versatile runner who won the Gotham (G3) on dirt and five other graded stakes (including two Grade 1s) on turf.

Morana showed some ability when breezing a bullet half-mile from the Keeneland starting gate in :47 on March 13, so let’s take a shot betting this four-year-old filly to win.

Selections

  • #2 Morana (9-2)
  • #1 Some Sweet Gal (7-2)
  • #8 Wing Queen (4-1)

Wagers

  • $20 to win on #2 Morana

Carryover Watch

Sunset Six: $20,078 Pick 6 carryover (4:23 p.m. ET)

Friday’s Sunset Six, a special $1 Pick 6 comprised of three races at Gulfstream Park and three at Santa Anita, boasts a $20,078 carryover.

If you’re looking for a single to build tickets around, we recommend checking out the fourth leg of the Sunset Six. That would be Race 7 at Santa Anita, a $50,000 allowance optional claimer for California-bred fillies and mares dashing six furlongs on turf.

#2 Still Unwritten (7-2) is the horse we recommend singling. After running only so-so in her first two starts on dirt, Still Unwritten switched to turf on Jan. 17, tackling a six-furlong maiden special weight for California-breds. The result? An easy victory. Still Unwritten led all the way to dominate by 2 3/4 lengths.

That impressive win yielded an 87 Brisnet Speed rating, the highest number belonging to any horse entered in Race 7. If Still Unwritten repeats that performance on Friday, she can bring her record on turf to a perfect 2-for-2.

Santa Anita: Race 4: $58,869 Pick 6 carryover (5:37 p.m. ET)

The Friday card at Santa Anita is highlighted by a $58,869 carryover in the $2 Pick 6. The final pool is expected to reach the $400,000 range.

Betting a Pick 6 with a $2 minimum can quickly get expensive, so finding a trustworthy single (or two) to build tickets around helps keep costs manageable. With that in mind, we’ve analyzed the entries for Friday’s sequence and identified a pair of runners worth singling.

First up is #2 Sendit Mo (3-5), the overwhelming favorite to win Race 6, a $25,000 claimer for three-year-olds sprinting 5 1/2 furlongs. Sendit Mo has competed exclusively against tougher competition, most notably winning a 5 1/2-furlong $50,000 starter optional claimer at Del Mar last fall.

Sendit Mo has posted Brisnet Speed ratings of 85 and 89 in two of his last three starts. None of his Race 6 rivals have ever cracked the 80 plateau, so if Sendit Mo brings his A game while dropping in class under hot jockey Antonio Fresu, he’ll be mighty tough to beat.

The second single we suggest is #2 Still Unwritten (7-2) in Race 7, for reasons outlined in our analysis of the Sunset Six.

Good luck!
