Best Bets and Quick Picks

Fair Grounds: Race 4: $15,000 Maiden Claiming (six furlongs on dirt, 3:15 p.m. ET)

#7 Brock’s Boy (10-1) has been beaten by double-digit margins in all four of his starts, but he’s competed exclusively against tougher competition in Kentucky. Last time out, he ran fourth in a $20,000 maiden claimer at Churchill Downs, earning a 60 Brisnet Speed rating that ranks as the highest number in Friday’s field.

Dropping in class and adding Lasix may place Brock’s Boy in the hunt for victory at double-digit odds. Let’s bet him to win and play him over first-time starter #4 Our Standard (5-2) in an exacta.

Selections

  • #7 Brock’s Boy (10-1)
  • #4 Our Standard (5-2)
  • #5 Heavenly Beliefs (6-1)

Wagers

  • $20 to win on #7 Brock’s Boy

Los Alamitos: Race 3: Maiden Special Weight (6 1/2 furlongs on dirt, 4:28 p.m. ET)

The experienced runners in this field don’t appear overly formidable, so let’s bet first-time starter #7 Toaster (9-5) to take home top honors.

Toaster is conditioned by Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert, a 32% winner with first-time starters. She’s turned in an encouraging series of workouts at Los Alamitos and Santa Anita, suggesting she’s ready for a winning debut under hot jockey Juan Hernandez, a 37% winner teaming up with Baffert over the last two months.

#2 Wolf Hill (5-1) can complete the exacta.

Selections

  • #7 Toaster (9-5)
  • #2 Wolf Hill (5-1)
  • #1 Caves (8-1)

Wagers

  • $20 to win on #7 Toaster
  • $10 Exacta: 7 with 2
    Total: $30

Oaklawn Park: Race 8: Advent S. (5 1/2 furlongs on dirt, 4:52 p.m. ET)

#5 Ganaas (7-2) trounced his first two starts sprinting, most notably taking a six-furlong allowance at Churchill Downs by 5 1/4 lengths. Then he faltered when stepping up in class and distance for the 1 1/16-mile Street Sense (G3), tiring to finish fifth by 4 3/4 lengths.

Cutting back to 5 1/2 furlongs and dropping into an ungraded stakes should help Ganaas bounce back to the winner’s circle. Let’s bet him to win and play him over Bowman Mill S. runner-up #6 Spun D M C (5-2) in an exacta.

Selections

  • #5 Ganaas (7-2)
  • #6 Spun D M C (5-2)
  • #2 Dirty Rich (4-1)

Wagers

  • $25 to win on #5 Ganaas
  • $5 Exacta: 5 with 6
    Total: $30

Carryover Watch

Turfway Park: Race 10: $22,565 Super High 5 carryover (10:25 p.m. ET)

After going unsolved for multiple days in a row, the $1 Super High 5 at Turfway Park boasts an enticing $22,565 carryover for Friday’s card.

As usual, the carryover is up for grabs in the final race of the day. That would be Race 10, a $30,000 maiden claimer taking place over one mile on Tapeta. #7 Big Rog (8-1) and #14 Caesar’s Ghost (10-1) are early scratches.

Wagers

  • $1 Super High 5: 6 with 12 with 8,9 with 2,5,8,9,14 with 1,2,4,5,8,9,14 ($40)
  • $1 Super High 5: 6 with 8,9 with 12 with 2,5,8,9,14 with 1,2,4,5,8,9,14 ($40)
  • $1 Super High 5: 6 with 8,9 with 8,9 with 12 with 1,2,4,5,14 ($10)
  • $1 Super High 5: 6 with 8,9 with 8,9 with 2,5,14 with 12 ($6)
    Total: $96

#6 Vino Dominus (3-1) looks like the horse to beat. Although he tired after setting the pace in a 1 1/16-mile $50,000 maiden claimer at Churchill Downs last month, finishing fifth, that was his first start back from a 4 1/2-month layoff.

Vino Dominus fared better over the same track, distance, and class level two starts back. He set the pace on his way to finishing second by 3 1/2 lengths, earning a flashy 80 Brisnet Speed rating.

Trainer Tom Drury Jr. wins at a 20% rate with horses running back for the second time following a layoff, so look for Vino Dominus to rebound while dropping in class under red-hot jockey Luan Machado. We suggest keying him on top in the Super High 5.

Underneath, emphasize #12 Hurricane Express (8-1). He’s run well over the Horseshoe Indianapolis turf course this year, finishing second in a one-mile maiden special weight and second in a 1 1/16-mile $30,000 maiden claimer. He was beaten only half a length in the latter race while earning a respectable 74 Brisnet Speed rating. We’ll count on him to finish in the top five at Turfway.

#8 Western Boy (5-1) and #9 Billy White Shoes (4-1) also warrant strong support. Western Boy is dropping in class after finishing 10th on debut in a five-furlong maiden special weight over the Churchill Downs turf course. Billy White Shoes earned an 81 Brisnet Speed rating when finishing fourth in a 1 1/16-mile $50,000 maiden claimer over the Aqueduct turf two starts back.

We’ll spread deeper for the final two slots of our tickets.

Good luck!
