Best Bets and Quick Picks
Horseshoe Indianapolis: Race 1: Maiden Special Weight (six furlongs on dirt, 2:10 p.m. ET)
The par winning Brisnet Speed rating for these conditions is 71, but none of the experienced runners in this field have posted a number higher than 59, suggesting the race is ripe for an upset.
Let’s take a shot backing first-time starter #4 It’s My Song (12-1). Trainer Antonio Duran wins at a 13% rate with first-time starters, and sire Speightstown is responsible for 13% winners from first-time starters. Those percentages are high enough to suggest It’s My Song can factor on debut, especially with hot jockey Rodney Prescott in the saddle.
Selections
- #4 It’s My Song (12-1)
- #5 Mitchell’s Joy (6-1)
- #1 Hunted Prayer (5-1)
Wagers
- $20 to win on #4 It’s My Song
Horseshoe Indianapolis: Race 2: $40,000 Maiden Claiming (five furlongs on dirt, 2:41 p.m. ET)
#5 Techwerkian (5-2) finished last of seven when debuting in a 4 1/2-furlong maiden special weight at Keeneland last month. But the winner, Waggley, subsequently prevailed in the Kentucky Juvenile S. at Churchill Downs, so it’s safe to say Techwerkian faced a tough rival.
Techwerkian ought to find the competition easier while dropping in class for a $40,000 maiden claimer at Horseshoe Indianapolis. Removing blinkers could potentially trigger a step forward, too.
Let’s place a win bet on Techwerkian, then bet her over #2 Fizzypopberrytwist (3-1) in a small exacta.
Selections
- #5 Techwerkian (5-2)
- #2 Fizzypopberrytwist (3-1)
- #1 C C’s Gift (4-1)
Wagers
- $25 to win on #5 Techwerkian
- $5 Exacta: 5 with 2
Total: $30
Horseshoe Indianapolis: Race 5: Maiden Special Weight (six furlongs on dirt, 4:14 p.m. ET)
#1 Unresponsive (15-1) is a first-time starter from the barn of Michelle Elliott, who has gone 5-for-16 (31%) debuting three-year-olds in dirt sprints at Horseshoe Indianapolis since 2021.
Perhaps Unresponsive can boost Elliott’s tally to 6-for-17. He enters off a five-furlong workout at Horseshoe Indianapolis and is slated to be guided by apprentice jockey Jose Gutierrez, who rides with a five-pound weight allowance. Over the last two months, Elliott and Gutierrez have won at an 18% rate teaming up together.
At 15-1, Unresponsive is worthy of a win bet.
Selections
- #1 Unresponsive (15-1)
- #6 Thousands of Hopes (4-1)
- #9 Willy’s in Charge (9-2)
Wagers
- $20 to win on #1 Unresponsive
Good luck!
