Best Bets and Quick Picks

Finger Lakes: Race 1: $8,000 Starter Optional Claiming (six furlongs on dirt, 12:10 p.m. ET)

#1 Saratoga Banker (3-1) has crossed the wire first in four of his five starts this year, including an $8,000 starter optional claimer during the summer. Along the way, he’s posted sharp Brisnet Speed ratings.

Saratoga Banker was disqualified from first to fourth in his latest race after interfering with #5 Stars N Stones (5-2), who is back for a rematch. But while the interference possibly cost Stars N Stones a better placing, we’re not certain Stars N Stones would have beaten Saratoga Banker.

Therefore, we’ll count on Saratoga Banker to maintain his edge on Monday, betting him to win and singling him to start a daily double.

Selections

  • #1 Saratoga Banker (3-1)
  • #5 Stars N Stones (5-2)
  • #6 Last Diamond (4-1)

Wagers

  • $15 to win on #1 Saratoga Banker
  • $10 Double: 1 with 2
    Total: $25

Finger Lakes: Race 2: $5,000 Maiden Claiming (six furlongs on dirt, 12:38 p.m. ET)

#2 Ry’s Advantage (2-1) crossed the wire first in a race at this track, distance, and class level in October 2025, but he was disqualified and placed fourth for interfering with a rival.

Ry’s Advantage hasn’t raced since, but trainer Paul Barrow wins at a 21% rate with horses returning from layoffs of 90 days or more, and a recent bullet five-furlong workout from the Finger Lakes starting gate in 1:01 1/5 suggests Ry’s Advantage is ready to pick up where he left off and finally break his maiden.

We’ll single Ry’s Advantage to conclude our daily double, then play him over second-time starter #1 Royal Chance (4-1), who is adding blinkers and dropping in class.

Selections

  • #2 Ry’s Advantage (2-1)
  • #1 Royal Chance (4-1)
  • #5 Runaway Roscoe (10-1)

Wagers

  • $15 Exacta: 2 with 1

Zia Park: Race 1: $10,000 Maiden Claiming (6 1/2 furlongs on dirt, 2:05 p.m. ET)

#7 Bucks Action (4-1) is dropping in class after spending his first five starts competing in Southern California. He exits a fourth-place finish in a $12,500 maiden claimer at Los Alamitos and warrants respect in his first start for trainer Justin Evans, who wins at a 24% rate with horses running for the first time under his care.

At 4-1, a win bet is in order.

Selections

  • #7 Bucks Action (4-1)
  • #5 Road Rules (15-1)
  • #2 Running Politician (3-1)

Wagers

  • $25 to win on #7 Bucks Action

Carryover Watch

Horseshoe Indianapolis: Race 4: $17,612 Pick 5 carryover (3:00 p.m. ET)

Horseshoe Indianapolis is celebrating the new week with a $17,612 carryover in the 50-cent Late Pick 5.

Mathematically speaking, it’s a tricky, but not insurmountable Pick 5 to solve. The five-race sequence contains 50 horses before scratches, averaging 10 per race. Only one is an also-eligible entrant, and before scratches there are 97,200 possible outcomes to consider. We’ve seen harder Pick 5s, but we’ve also seen much easier ones.

Assembling a winning ticket will be easier if we can identify a trustworthy single to build tickets around. Fortunately, #3 Melody Man (2-1) in Race 6 appears to fit the bill.

Best single: Race 6: #3 Melody Man (2-1)

The sixth race is a $12,500 maiden claimer for three-year-olds and older horses racing one mile on turf. Melody Man, a four-year-old gelding, should be tough to beat while dropping sharply in class for trainer J. Kent Sweezey.

Melody Man exits a ninth-place finish in a one-mile maiden special weight on turf at Kentucky Downs. And between December and March, he finished second in three straight $50,000 maiden optional claimers on turf at Gulfstream Park, beaten by margins of a neck, a neck, and half a length while earning sharp Brisnet Speed ratings of 80, 74, and 75. All those numbers are higher than the par winning Brisnet Speed rating (72) for Monday’s conditions.

None of the other horses entered in Race 6 have earned a Brisnet Speed rating higher than 78, so Melody Man at his peak is the fastest horse in this field. And since Sweezey wins at a strong 25% rate with horses dropping from maiden special weight into maiden claiming company, Melody Man should have every chance to bring his A game to this $12,500 maiden claimer.

As a result, Melody Man is a compelling single in the middle leg of the Late Pick 5. By singling Melody Man, we’ll slice the number of possible Pick 5 outcomes to consider from 97,200 down to 10,800, a solid start toward assembling a winning ticket.

Good luck!
