Oaklawn Park: Horses to bet in the $27,923 Pick 6 carryover

The $1 Classix Pick 6 at Oaklawn Park went unsolved on Saturday, triggering a $27,923 carryover into Sunday’s card.

The Classix Pick 6 spans Races 4-9. The first two legs of the sequence appear straightforward to handicap, allowing bettors to use only one or two horses per race and then spread deeper in later legs of the Pick 6.

Race 4 is a 1 1/16-mile $10,000 claimer for horses who have never won two races. #1 Major Dax (5-2) is a logical favorite while dropping in class. In two recent starts over this track and distance, he’s finished fourth in a $32,000 claimer for non-winners of two races and third in a $40,000-$20,000 claimer for non-winners of two races.

But while dropping in class should put Major Dax in win contention, it’s worth noting he’s a late runner without much tactical speed. There isn’t much pace entered in Race 4, which could lend an advantage to #7 Arky Road (3-1).

Arky Road has stayed within two lengths of the early pace in two recent starts over this track and class level. Last time out, he finished second in a $16,000 claimer for non-winners of two races. Arky Road figures to sit a perfect trip stalking a slow pace in Race 4, giving him a shot to hold off Major Dax in the homestretch.

Moving on, Race 5 is a $10,000 claimer for Arkansas-bred older horses who haven’t won two races since Nov. 19. The six-furlong dirt dash looks ripe for conquest by #2 Burlsworth (5-2).

Burlsworth was much the best in a $16,000 claimer for Arkansas-breds over this track and distance earlier this month. After pressing the pace, he took over to dominate by four lengths.

Burlsworth owns the best recent Brisnet Speed ratings among horses entered in Race 5, and he’s recently defeated six of the nine rivals he’ll face on Sunday. The five-year-old gelding looks tough to beat while dropping down to the $10,000 level, so we recommend singling Burlsworth in the Classix Pick 6.
