Oaklawn Park: Race 6: $10,727 Pick 6 carryover (4:14 p.m. ET)
The feature race in Saturday’s $10,727 Classix Pick 6 carryover at Oaklawn is Race 9, the 1 1/8-mile Essex H. (G3) for older horses. #5 Skippylongstocking (4-5) is the heavy favorite after winning the Pegasus World Cup (G1) in fine fashion, but historically he loses more than he wins, and he rarely strings together multiple victories in a row. Can he win the Essex? Absolutely. Is he worth singling at 4-5? Perhaps not.
We recommend including #6 Accelerize (9-2) as backup. The improving four-year-old has been hot, winning the Louisiana (G3) before finishing second to Dubai World Cup (G1) winner Hit Show in the Mineshaft (G3). There’s a chance Accelerize will shake loose on an uncontested lead in the Essex, which could make him tough to catch down the homestretch.
Turfway Park: Race 12: $7,318 Super High 5 carryover (6:25 p.m. ET)
Saturday’s $7,318 carryover in the $1 Super High 5 at Turfway Park is up for grabs in Race 12, the Jeff Ruby Steaks (G3) for three-year-olds racing 1 1/8 miles on Tapeta.
We recommend keying #11 Stark Contrast (5-2) on top of your tickets. He owns a strong finishing kick that has carried him to triumphs in the Zuma Beach (G3) and Eddie Logan S. on turf, as well as a runner-up finish in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf (G1). His class should be enough to win the day, even while trying Tapeta for the first time.
Underneath, emphasize #2 Fulleffort (7-2), runner-up in the Leonatus S. and John Battaglia Memorial S. at Turfway. Fulleffort is a deep closer who may relish stretching out over 1 1/8 miles, and a top-three finish appears well within the realm of possibility.
#8 Chaos Agent (10-1) warrants respect too. He won his debut in a 1 1/16-mile maiden special weight over Gulfstream Park’s Tapeta track, earning a strong 94 Brisnet Speed rating. That’s the highest number boasted by any of the Jeff Ruby entrants.
Good luck!
