Dick Powell analyzes Tuesday’s program at Presque Isle Downs and offers his selections.
Race 1
1st: (3) NONE THE WISER – was soundly beaten in his dirt debut two starts back to finish up last year. He came back over seven months later for his PID debut and almost went gate to wire when dropped to this maiden claiming level.
2nd: (4) EASTERN EXTENSION – was an even third on the Tapeta at Gulfstream Park when dropped down to this level, then raced evenly there again. Matt Kintz wins 19% with his maiden claimers and goes with Martina Rojas.
3rd: (5) KING REIGERT – first-time starter by Warrior’s Reward that is out of a dam by Into Mischief.
Race 2
1st: (2) COULD DO – did nothing in his first three career starts on the turf, then was a good second in his Tapeta debut at Turfway. He did nothing last out there and returns 137 days later for Louis Ruberto who wins 23% in this spot.
2nd: (1) WETLANDS WILLY – first-time starter from Kevin Rice who wins 14% with his debut runners and 13% against this maiden level. Son of Will Take Charge is training well here and gets Israel Rodriguez – 24% with Rice.
3rd: (7) MOHTAFIL – rallied for third in his PID debut, then showed good speed when blinkers were added.
Race 3
1st: (2) ANGEL OF HARLEM – added blinkers and won her PID debut here two starts back, then was a good third as the 13-10 favorite when moved up in class. She drops down to a more realistic class level for Murray Rojas.
2nd: (3) VICOUNTESS – interesting filly has been up and down the class ladder for Brandon Kulp, who wins 25% second start off the layoff and 29% with his overall claimers. Pablo Morales picks up the mount – 14% with his sprinters.
3rd: (6) ACE UP HER SLEEVE – was a good third two starts back against similar to finish up last season, then tired last out.
Race 4
1st: (2) LA GIRVINA – took nine starts to break her maiden, which she did on turf against maiden claimers for the first time. She came right back to win again, then tired in a wide trip from post 9. Scott Spieth is winning 38% at this year’s meet.
3rd: (6) LIZZIE BABY – missed by a neck three starts back on the turf at Tampa Bay, then was beaten by 11 lengths there. She bounced back here to win by five lengths last out and now drops down in class for Kevin Rice – 35% with this move.
3rd: (5) CANDY CAUSE – won her first two starts on Tapeta at Turfway, then was a good second here as the odds-on favorite.

Race 5
1st: (1) QUEEN ANNA T – won her PID debut two starts back against similar claiming company, then tired last out after gunning to the front. Larry Rivelli wins 29% first start after being beaten as the favorite and with his synthetic-track starters.
2nd: (3) PRACTICALITY – spent the winter racing on the dirt at Tampa Bay against much better company. She shipped here last out and raced evenly against better company. Juan Arriagada wins 42% with this dropdown and 27% with his claimers.
3rd: (4) MAGIC LIFE – horse for the course was a good second to finish last season, then won first out as the odds-on favorite.
Race 6
1st: (2) STARSHIP EMPIRE – horse for the course has 21 first or seconds in 28 starts. He was second four times last year in seven tries but returned here last out off an eight-month layoff and won easily in decent time.
2nd: (3) THE DOORMAN – was an easy winner here two starts back against better, then was third as the 3-10 favorite when dropped to this level. Son of Frosted draws well with Israel Rodriguez – 14% with his route mounts.
3rd: (7) I LUCKED OUT – was beaten 57 lengths in three starts at Turfway, then shipped here and was a good second.
Race 7
1st: (3) COCKTAIL KISSES – broke her maiden three starts back on the turf at Tampa Bay, then came back there and held on for third. She showed high speed in her PID debut going two turns and drops down in class and distance for Matt Kintz.
2nd: (6) TIME LEAP – added Lasix two starts back and won going away on the Tapeta at Gulfstream. Off for three months, she was a good second here against this conditioned claiming level going this distance in good time.
3rd: (8) SWEETCATHERINEROSE – held well for third against this level and tries them again with Brandon Tapara.
Race 8
1st: (8) TRAVELLER – returned to the races off the layoff and showed good speed to the deep stretch. He settled better last out going this distance, and post 8 might force Eddie Dominguez to gun to the front.
2nd: (3) ANCHISES – was a sharp winner two starts back here off the long layoff in his PID debut, then did nothing in his first start off the claim. He stretches out to two turns for Arriagada, who wins 25% third start off the layoff.
3rd: (4) STEAL THE RHODE – went gate to wire to break his maiden two starts back, then tired after setting a demanding pace.
