Santa Anita: Betting a double in the Summertime Oaks

June 7th, 2025

Far away from the rain at Saratoga, it’s bright and sunny for the Saturday card at Santa Anita, which is highlighted by the $100,000 Summertime Oaks (G3).

A 1 1/16-mile contest for three-year-old fillies, the Summertime Oaks is the seventh race on a 10-race card. It kicks off a $2 daily double which we’ll attempt to hit using only one horse in each leg:

Race 7: Summertime Oaks: analysis

#7 Cash Call (6-5) is a clear favorite for Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert. She’s 2-for-2 this year, winning a six-furlong maiden special weight at Santa Anita with a strong 100 Brisnet Speed rating before dominating a $100,000 allowance optional claimer over the same track and distance by five lengths, earning a 96 Brisnet Speed rating.

None of Cash Call’s Summertime Oaks rivals have posted a Brisnet Speed rating higher than 97, so a peak performance from the favorite should yield a victory. It’s encouraging to note Baffert wins at a powerful 30% rate with horses running long for the first time.

Race 8: $50,000 Allowance Optional Claiming: analysis

#1 Ottoman Prince (4-1) enters in hot form for trainer Phil D’Amato. On March 25, he closed from midfield to win a one-mile $32,000 claimer over the Santa Anita turf course by three-quarters of a length. Then in an identical contest on May 4, Ottoman Prince employed the same tactics to roll home on top by 2 1/4 lengths.

Those victories earned Brisnet Speed ratings of 90 and 92, which stack up well against the par winning number (90) for the conditions of Race 8, which is a $50,000 allowance optional claimer taking place over one mile on turf.

Ottoman Prince’s key rival, #11 Jeweled Shillelagh (5-1), is a speed horse marooned in an outside post. His wide draw figures to compromise his chances while giving an advantage to the rail-drawn Ottoman Prince, who has jockey Antonio Fresu (a 35% winner teaming up with D’Amato over the last two months) slated to ride.

We envision Ottoman Prince saving ground in midfield before pouncing to his third straight victory.

Good luck!
