Best Bets and Quick Picks
Thistledown: Race 3: Maiden Special Weight (six furlongs on dirt, 1:50 p.m. ET)
#6 Perfect Angel (7-5) is a logical favorite, but after compiling a 5-0-2-2 record in Thistledown maiden special weights, she’s hard to trust at a short price.
Unraced #5 Holly’s Hobby (7-2) is an interesting alternative. She fails from the barn of Richard Zielinski, a 23% winner with first-time starters. Holly’s Hobby won’t have to be a superstar to win on debut.
Let’s play a win bet and an exacta accordingly.
Selections
- #5 Holly’s Hobby (7-2)
- #6 Perfect Angel (7-5)
- #4 Jac’s Cocoabella (2-1)
Wagers
- $15 to win on #5 Holly’s Hobby (7-2)
- $15 Exacta: 5 with 6
Total: $30
Horseshoe Indianapolis: Race 7: Maiden Special Weight (one mile on dirt, 5:16 p.m. ET)
This field of Indiana-bred juveniles hasn’t come up especially deep on paper, so let’s bet #3 Eyes On Andy (15-1), a first-time starter.
Eyes On Andy’s pedigree suggests he’ll handle one mile, and an encouraging series of workouts at Ellis Park in Kentucky suggest he can outrun his 15-1 morning-line odds.
A win bet is in order.
Selections
- #3 Eyes On Andy (15-1)
- #5 My Lunar Charm (5-1)
- #8 Ta Ta Today Junior (8-5)
Wagers
- $15 to win on #3 Eyes On Andy
Assiniboia Downs: Race 3: Winnipeg Futurity (six furlongs on dirt, 9:25 p.m. ET)
Who’s the fastest entrant in this field of juveniles? In terms of Brisnet Speed ratings, it’s the filly #4 Wecanonlyimagine (5-1), who posted an 81 when dominating the six-furlong Princess Margaret S. by 5 1/4 lengths.
Wecanonlyimagine is unbeaten in three starts and has every chance to keep her win streak alive while facing males in the Winnipeg Futurity. #1 Mighty Mikee (7-5) can complete the exacta.
Selections
- #4 Wecanonlyimagine (5-1)
- #1 Mighty Mikee (7-5)
- #2 Marking Broadway (3-1)
Wagers
- $20 to win on #4 Wecanonlyimagine
- $10 Exacta: 4 with 1
Total: $30
Carryover Watch
Presque Isle Downs: Race 1: $3,215 Pick 5 carryover (3:30 p.m. ET)
Tuesday’s 50-cent Early Pick 5 at Presque Isle Downs features a value-adding $3,215 carryover.
Let’s analyze the sequence and assemble a ticket for under $50:
Race 1: $10,000 Maiden Claiming (five furlongs on Tapeta)
#4 Nun Gimel Hay Po (9-5) brings respectable Brisnet Speed ratings to the table, but after six straight defeats against $7,500 company, she isn’t a lock to win at the $10,000 level. #1 Boho Lady (3-1), a shipper from Florida, may challenge while dropping in class off a long layoff.
Race 2: $12,500 Claiming (six furlongs on Tapeta)
#5 Venik (8-5) has posted five straight Brisnet Speed ratings in the 74-78 range while competing primarily in tougher $25,000 claimers. He should be tough to beat while dropping in class, though #2 Kunooz (8-1)—who is switching from turf to Tapeta—is an appealing longshot. In his last try on Tapeta, Kunooz won a $15,000 maiden claimer at Turfway Park with an 82 Brisnet Speed rating.
Race 3: $12,500 Claiming (six furlongs on Tapeta)
#5 Bucchini (7-5) is a must-use contender after finishing second in her last two starts over this track, distance, and class level. But don’t overlook #3 Aurora’s Music (5-1), whose limited experience on Tapeta includes a couple of respectable fourth-place finishes in $30,000 maiden claimers at Turfway Park.
Race 4: $5,000 Claiming (one mile and 70 yards on Tapeta)
#8 Night Ride (4-1) and #9 Runaway Harry (3-1) are logical contenders while dropping in class out of tougher races at Presque Isle. #1 Louisianimal (5-2), a sprinter stretching out in distance, fits well at this class level and must also be respected.
Race 5: $40,000 Allowance Optional Claiming (6 1/2 furlongs on Tapeta)
There are many viable win threats in this field. #1 Mean Eileen (4-1) could factor in her Tapeta debut. #3 Time for an Angel (5-1) smashed a $13,500 starter optional claimer at Presque Isle last time out. #4 Zo Lee (3-1) and #7 Milliat (5-2) have shown ability on both turf and Tapeta. We’ll use all four of these fillies and mares to wrap up our Pick 5 ticket.
- 50-cent Pick 5: 1,4 with 2,5 with 3,5 with 1,8,9 with 1,3,4,7 ($48)
Good luck!
