Best Bets and Quick Picks
Turf Paradise: Race 2: $30,000 Maiden Optional Claiming (one mile on turf, 3:43 p.m. ET)
#3 Tanmantoo (3-1) debuted in a tough 1 1/8-mile maiden special weight on turf at Del Mar. He got bumped around in traffic during the early stages of the race and never factored after that, finishing last behind Plutarch, who had previously placed third in the American Pharoah (G1).
Tanmantoo figures to find the competition easier at Turf Paradise, where he’ll compete with Lasix for the first time. Trainer Jonathan Thomas wins at a 37% rate with horses racing on Lasix for the first time, and at a 26% rate with second-time starters, so let’s bet Tanmantoo to win and key him over #4 Need the Purse (2-1) in an exacta.
Selections
- #3 Tanmantoo (3-1)
- #4 Need the Purse (2-1)
- #5 Manx Missile (4-1)
Wagers
- $22 to win on #3 Tanmantoo
- $8 Exacta: 3 with 4
Total: $30
Turf Paradise: Race 6: $12,500 Allowance Optional Claiming (5 1/2 furlongs on dirt, 5:44 p.m. ET)
#4 Crash Corrigan (6-1) was a capable competitor in California several years back, even placing at the stakes level. Competing on dirt, he earned a bevy of Brisnet Speed ratings in the 92-96 range, and those numbers tower over the par winning number (84) for Tuesday’s conditions at Turf Paradise.
Crash Corrigan hasn’t raced since September 2022, and it’s difficult to predict whether he’ll recapture his best form off the ultra-long layoff. But a swift half-mile workout in :46 3/5 on Dec. 28 at Turf Paradise suggests he retains at least a bit of his old sparkle.
At 6-1, Crash Corrigan is worthy of a win bet.
Selections
- #4 Crash Corrigan (6-1)
- #2 Devil Among Us (7-2)
- #7 Sir Bregovic (5-2)
Wagers
- $20 to win on #4 Crash Corrigan
Turf Paradise: Race 8: $6,250 Claiming (4 1/2 furlongs on dirt, 7:05 p.m. ET)
#3 Southern Slang (8-1) has done well competing in short sprints at Los Alamitos in California. During the spring, he wired a 4 1/2-furlong $3,500 claimer.
We’re optimistic Southern Slang’s early speed will serve him well, dashing 4 1/2 furlongs at Turf Paradise. It helps that hot trainer Jose Silva Jr. (a 25% winner at Turf Paradise this meet) has enlisted apprentice jockey Talliyah Timentwa to ride, giving Southern Slang a five-pound weight allowance.
Let’s bet Southern Slang to win.
Selections
- #3 Southern Slang (8-1)
- #7 Candy’s Wildcat (5-2)
- #8 Winter Falcon (3-1)
Wagers
- $20 to win on #3 Southern Slang
Good luck!
