Saturday is closing day of the Turfway Park meet, which means a $4,492 carryover in the $1 Super High 5 is slated for mandatory payout.
The prize pool is up for grabs in Race 9, a maiden special weight for three-year-olds and older horses racing 1 1/2 miles on Tapeta. #8 Rapoport (2-1) is the morning-line favorite, but #9 Peak Performer (3-1) is a logical challenger.
Turfway Park: Race 9: Wagers
- $1 Super High 5: 8,9 with 8,9 with 2,4 with 2,3,4,11 with 1,2,3,4,5,11 ($48)
- $1 Super High 5: 8,9 with 8,9 with 3,11 with 2,4 with 1,2,3,4,5,11 ($32)
Total: $80
Rapoport has shown strong form in a pair of 1 1/4-mile maiden special weights at Turfway. On Dec. 3, he overcame a stumbling start to rally and finish third, beaten only a nose for second place by Peak Performer. Then—following a fifth-place finish in a one-mile maiden special weight—Rapoport stretched back over 1 1/4 miles on March 4 and closed from midfield to finish second by a head.
The latter effort yielded an 87 Brisnet Speed rating, the highest number belonging to any of the horses entered in Race 9. Rapoport’s racing record thus far suggests he’ll only improve while stretching out over 1 1/2 miles, cementing the chestnut gelding as a compelling win contender.
Peak Performer is another must-use runner. The son of Curlin edged Rapoport on Dec. 3, then came back to rally and finish second in a 1 3/16-mile maiden special weight on Tapeta at Gulfstream Park. Peak Performer may relish stretching out over 1 1/2 miles, so we recommend boxing him with Rapoport in the top two slots of the Super High 5, counting on one to win and the other to finish second.
#4 Abbi Fede (7-2) finished behind Rapoport when fifth on Dec. 3 and fourth on March 4, but he wasn’t badly beaten in either race. Another top-five finish is well within reach.
#2 Run Forrest Run (8-1) debuted against Rapoport on March 4 and finished fifth, beaten 4 1/2 lengths. His sire, Temple City, won the Cougar II H. (G3) racing 1 1/2 miles over a synthetic track, so Run Forrest Run is eligible to improve while stretching out over 1 1/2 miles for his second start.
We’ll round out our tickets with #1 King Lee (15-1), #3 Che (20-1), #5 Niigon’s Law (20-1), and #11 Coburg (10-1).
Good luck!
