Best Bets and Quick Picks

Churchill Downs: Race 1: $62,500 Claiming (seven furlongs on dirt, 1:00 p.m. ET)

#9 Discotheque (9-5) is a logical favorite while dropping in class. Last time out, he chased a hot pace in a seven-furlong allowance at Keeneland before tiring to finish fifth in a 12-horse field.

During the summer at Saratoga, Discotheque finished first and second in a pair of seven-furlong $55,000 starter allowances, earning sharp Brisnet Speed ratings of 90 and 94. A return to that level of form can send him to the Churchill Downs winner’s circle.

Let’s bet Discotheque to win and play him over #4 Feral (15-1) and #8 Attersee (6-1) in an exacta.

Selections

  • #9 Discotheque (9-5)
  • #4 Feral (15-1)
  • #8 Attersee (6-1)

Wagers

  • $20 to win on #9 Discotheque
  • $5 Exacta: 9 with 4,8 ($10)
    Total: $30

Churchill Downs: Race 2: $80,000 Allowance Optional Claiming (1 3/8 miles on turf, 1:29 p.m. ET)

#1 Rapoport (8-1) is an interesting price play. Although he won a 1 1/16-mile allowance at Ellis Park two starts back, you can make a case he’ll run as well or better over 1 3/8 miles. The stretch-running gelding broke his maiden racing 1 1/2 miles on Tapeta at Turfway Park, and he’s run well a few times over 1 1/4 miles.

We’ll try a win bet on Rapoport. Don’t forget, he’s picking up hot jockey Jose Ortiz, a 22% winner on turf this year.

Selections

  • #1 Rapoport (8-1)
  • #3 Esmark (3-1)
  • #6 Catch the Breeze (5-1)

Wagers

  • $25 to win on #1 Rapoport

Churchill Downs: Race 5: Allowance (1 3/8 miles on turf, 2:57 p.m. ET)

#7 Caragogo (6-1) has early speed. He’s set the pace in each of his last two starts, winning a 1 1/16-mile maiden special weight at Kentucky Downs and finishing second in a 1 3/16-mile Keeneland allowance.

Caragogo is eligible to shake loose on an uncontested lead while stretching out over 1 3/8 miles, which could set the stage for victory at enticing odds. A win bet is in order, along with an exacta using #1 My Boy Tony (8-1) and #4 Greystone (2-1) for second place.

Selections

  • #7 Caragogo (6-1)
  • #1 My Boy Tony (8-1)
  • #4 Greystone (2-1)

Wagers

  • $17 to win on #7 Caragogo
  • $4 Exacta: 7 with 1,4 ($8)
    Total: $25

Carryover Watch

Belmont Park: Race 3: $46,127 Pick 6 carryover (2:12 p.m. ET)

The start of the highly anticipated 2026 Breeders’ Cup is still two days away. In the meantime, why not pursue Wednesday’s $46,127 Pick 6 carryover at Belmont Park?

To win a share, you’ll have to wade through 58 horses entered across the six races. With an average field size of nearly 9.7 horses before scratches, and with 645,120 possible Pick 6 outcomes to analyze, it’s a tricky sequence to decipher.

We’ll aim to simplify matters by singling #6 Market Timing (4-1) in Race 7, an $80,000 allowance optional claimer taking place over 1 5/16 miles on the inner turf course.

Best single: #6 Market Timing (4-1)

It might seem risky to single Market Timing, considering he’s only run four times and is squaring off against a number of stakes-experienced rivals. #1 Hill Road (9-2) won the 2025 Peter Pan (G3) and has competed twice in the Breeders’ Cup. #4 Eff Thirty Five (7-2) has placed at the Grade 3 level and ran sixth against a quality field in the Kentucky Turf Cup (G2). Surely they’re viable win contenders?

Yes, we respect the chances of Hill Road and Eff Thirty Five. But they’re both late runners with little to no tactical speed. That could be problematic since the eight-horse field in Race 7 contains very little pace on paper.

The only obvious frontrunner in the lineup is Market Timing. In a 1 1/16-mile maiden special weight on June 21 at Monmouth Park, he led all the way to win by 10 1/4 lengths. And on Sept. 6, he again led from the start to take a 1 3/8-mile $55,000 allowance optional claimer at Saratoga by a neck over next-out winners Iron Sight and Noble Factor.

Market Timing held only a narrow lead for the first mile of his allowance win and set decent early pace fractions of :23.75 (following a long run-up distance) and :47.54. Yet he still had enough left in the tank to speed his final furlong in :11.92. If he shakes loose on an easier lead at Belmont Park, he can outsprint Hill Road and Eff Thirty Five down the homestretch to record a second straight allowance win.

Good luck!
