Best Bets and Quick Picks

Turfway Park: Race 7: $40,000 Allowance Optional Claiming (1 1/4 miles on Tapeta, 8:55 p.m. ET)

#5 Virgin Colada (2-1) has shown flashes of talent on turf, finishing second in the Miss Grillo (G2) and P. G. Johnson S. as a juvenile. But she took to the Turfway Tapeta quite nicely in a 1 1/4-mile $25,000 allowance optional claimer last month, rallying from seventh place to prevail with a sharp 89 Brisnet Speed rating.

We’ll count on Virgin Colada to win right back while sticking to the same track and distance. Let’s bet her to win and single her to start a double wager.

Selections

  • #5 Virgin Colada (2-1)
  • #1 Streetwhereyoulive (15-1)
  • #4 Sakura Blossom (3-1)

Wagers

  • $24 to win on #5 Virgin Colada
  • $6 Double: 5 with 11
    Total: $30

Turfway Park: Race 8: Maiden Special Weight (one mile on Tapeta, 9:25 p.m. ET)

There’s almost no pace in this field on paper, which should play to the strengths of #11 Sudden Squall (5-2). In a race over this track, distance, and class level on Dec. 10, she dashed to the front and led until the final furlong, when she weakened slightly to finish second by 1 1/4 lengths.

If Sudden Squall shakes loose through a slow pace on Wednesday, she can cruise to the winner’s circle over second-time starter #3 Miss Blanco (9-2). We’ll place a win bet and an exacta accordingly.

Selections

  • #11 Sudden Squall (5-2)
  • #3 Miss Blanco (9-2)
  • #8 Figurine (8-1)

Wagers

  • $24 to win on #11 Sudden Squall
  • $6 Exacta: 11 with 3
    Total: $30

Turfway Park: Race 9: $30,000 Maiden Claiming (6 1/2 furlongs on Tapeta, 9:55 p.m. ET)

#10 Wild Cotton (12-1) is an unraced three-year-old trained by Doug Cowans, who wins at a 25% rate with first-time starters and at a 24% rate with horses debuting in maiden claimers.

Wild Cotton showed some talent when breezing a bullet five furlongs in 1:00 2/5 at Turfway, and as a son of Volatile (who sires a respectable 13% winners from first-time starters), he has the pedigree to win from an early age.

At 12-1, a win bet is in order.

Selections

  • #10 Wild Cotton (12-1)
  • #8 Dispersion (5-2)
  • #1 Muir Woods (2-1)

Wagers

  • $20 to win on #10 Wild Cotton

Carryover Watch

Turfway Park: $17,306 Super High 5 carryover (9:55 p.m. ET)

The final race on Wednesday at Turfway Park features an enticing $17,306 carryover in the $1 Super High 5.

The evening finale is Race 10, a $30,000 maiden claimer for fillies and mares sprinting 6 1/2 furlongs on Tapeta. A dozen horses entered, though #6 Rich in Faith (20-1) is an early scratch, leaving us with 55,440 possible Super High 5 outcomes.

Wagers

  • $1 Super High 5: 5 with 11 with 7,9,10 with 7,8,9,10,12 with 7,8,9,10,12 ($36)
  • $1 Super High 5: 5 with 7,9,10 with 11 with 7,8,9,10,12 with 7,8,9,10,12 ($36)
    Total: $72

We suggest keying #5 Taqdeer (2-1) on top of your tickets. The daughter of Tamarkuz has run well in three recent sprint starts over the Turfway Tapeta. Facing tougher competition at the $50,000 maiden claiming level, Taqdeer finished fourth, second, and second. Her runner-up finishes earned sharp Brisnet Speed ratings of 77 and 74, right around the par winning number (77) for Wednesday’s conditions.

Dropping down to the $30,000 level should make Taqdeer tough to beat for the red-hot jockey/trainer duo of Martin Garcia and Cipriano Contereas, who have gone 4-for-13 (31%) teaming up with each other over the last two months.

Underneath Taqdeer, emphasize #11 Click Here (5-2), who is likewise dropping in class. Two starts back, the daughter of Flatter closed from seventh place to finish third in a one-mile $50,000 maiden claimer at Turfway, beaten only one length.

Click Here has spent most of her career running one mile or farther, but her lone sprint start wasn’t bad. In her debut, she rallied from 12th place to finish fourth by 1 3/4 lengths in a six-furlong maiden special weight at Turfway, earning a 77 Brisnet Speed rating that ranks as the best of her career. It’s possible cutting back to 6 1/2 furlongs will trigger improvement from Click Here, especially since she’s simultaneously dropping in class.

We’ll round out our tickets with #7 Cuvee Creed (6-1), #8 Dani Girl (8-1), #9 Teralee’s Charm (20-1), #10 Givemethebeat (10-1), and #12 Kyler (10-1).

Good luck!
