Wednesday Harness Preview for 4/30/2014
by Ted Black
While the standardbred scene in Delaware may have shifted south from Dover Downs to Harrington Raceway, the state's half-mile oval still puts the Wednesday spotlight on its top trotters, as done Pompano Park in southern Florida.
In the opening race on the Wednesday card at Harrington, look for Deliver Delovin to post the mild upset in this non-winners of $5501 last five starts class for trotters. Last week in a slightly lower condition, Deliver Delovin raced first over into a good back half and only got beat a nose. Granted, it's tough to back a horse stepping up off a loss, but Deliver Delovin is worth a play following last week's effort.
One race later in the second half of the daily double, give U-B a chance to prevail despite drawing post position seven in this non-winners of $2501 last five class for trotters. Last week in this group, U-B attempted to rally second over into a good back half and was forced to race very wide on the far turn after being impeded briefly and settled for third. Tonight he will have to work out a decent trip from an outside draw, but is worth backing.
Four races later in the featured Open, look for Traverse Seelster to make immediate amends for his second-place finish last week as the 4-5 choice in this class. Traverse Seelster was forced to race first over into a good back half cut out by Awsome Valley and settled for second. But this evening he draws inside and should be on the lead before the half and that should enable him to draw clear in the lane.
In the next race on the card, a non-winners of three event for pacing fillies and mares, expect Spark Out to prevail following a stellar performance last week when she unleashed a 57 second back half despite racing first over.
Much later on the card in the 14th, a non-winners of four races lifetime event for pacers, back Steady Pulse with some confidence from post five. Last week he overcame post eight to make the front before the opening quarter, sat a loose pocket and finished second. Steady Pulse moves in several spots this evening and will likely look to dictate the tempo throughout.
In the opener on the Pompano card, give Foxy Ginger merits backing in the non-winners of six races or $20,000 lifetime event for younger trotters. Last week in this class, Foxy Ginger got away fifth, angled out first over and grinded her way to a third-place finish despite a rapid back half. With an honest tempo up front this evening, Foxy Ginger could prevail at a decent price.
