Yonkers Kicks Off 2017 Season on Sunday

January 8th, 2017

While many sports enthusiasts were watching the National Football League Wild Card games on Sunday, Yonkers Raceway kicked off its 2017 season with a solid card that featured distance events for top trotters and the standard mile races for older pacers.

Trainer Rene Allard started off the new year at the New York half-mile oval with consecutive victories in upper class events, one each for trotters and pacers.

In the third race, a non-winners of $25,000 last five starts class for older pacers, E Z Noah (Daniel Dube) benefited from a pocket trip behind even-money choice Polak A (Jordan Stratton), angled out at the top of the lane and wore down the favorite late for a head victory in 1:55.1 in his seasonal debut.

An eight-year-old Western Terror gelding trained by Allard, E Z Noah kicked off his 2017 campaign and notched his second straight tally and his third win from his last five outings. E Z Noah finished his 2016 slate with a 5-10-3 slate and $105,000 bankroll from 33 starts.

Then one race later in the $75,000 Open Handicap at one-mile and a quarter, Allard handed the lines to Jordan Stratton who promptly steered Red Hot Herbie to a determined score in 2:27.3. A seven-year-old Here Comes Herbie gelding trained by Allard, Red Hot Herbie began his 2017 season on a winning note after ending his previous campaign with a 6-5-13 slate and $160,000 bankroll from 36 tries.
Several races later on the card in a non-winners of $25,000 last five starts class for older trotters at one-mile and a quarter, Rubber Duck (Joe Bongiorno) maintained his sharp form and signified his readiness for the Open when he overcame post eight and a parked out journey to prevail by 10 lengths in 2:27 flat.

A five-year-old Muscle Mass gelding trained by Richard Johnson, Rubber Duck kicked off his 2017 with a win and notched his second straight score after ending the previous campaign with a sharp score against conditioned foes at The Meadowlands. Rubber Duck posted a faster clocking than Red Hot Herbie in the Open and will likely join that group next Sunday.

Then in the finale on the Sunday card, Somewhere In L A (Jason Bartlett) took no prisoners in capturing the "Winners Over" Handicap by two lengths over a fast-closing Roland N Rock in 1:53.4. A six-year-old Somebeachsomewhere gelding trained by Richard Banca, Somewhere In L A kicked off his current season with a win after ending his previous campaign with a 6-3-2 slate and $110,000 bankroll from 23 tries.

Somewhere In L A ended his previous campaign with a win against conditioned foes and he now owns two straight scores and victories in four of his last seven outings. Somewhere In L A now owns a 21-14-9 slate and $866,000 bankroll from 80 lifetime tries. Roland N Rock rallied for the place spot and has now finished second in his last four outings for trainer Rob Harmon.
