Yonkers Offers Solid Overnight Card
One week after the track did not offer a Saturday night card, Yonkers Raceway presented a solid overnight card in which several events were considerably more formful than others.
In one of the early races on the card, Sweet Talkin Satin (Jason Bartlett) quarter moved to command past a 27.2 opener, maintained honest splits of 56.2 and 1:24.2 and just outlasted the late bid of pocket-sitting In The Huddle (Jordan Stratton) for a neck victory in 1:52.2 in a non-winners of $10,000 last five starts/optional non-winners of $100,000 lifetime class.
Sweet Talkin Satin notched his second straight victory for trainer Tom Milici and now owns a 6-6-2 slate and $59,000 banked from 30 starts this year. He also would own the distinction of posting the fastest clocking on the card although the non-winners of $10,000 last five class is typically not among the upper tiers on a Saturday night at Yonkers.
But perhaps the most promising effort on the night was delivered by the runner-up. In The Huddle, a four-year-old American Ideal gelding trained by Joe DeCarlo finished second for a third straight week, but looks like a potential star in the overnight ranks. He still fits the non-winners of $100,000 lifetime condition tagged onto this class.
Two races later on the card, Provocativeprince N (Stratton) also made an immediate impression in his United States debut when he raced first over down the backside, fanned three-wide around Macintosh N (Shaun Vallee) at the top of the lane and overhauled that one easily in the lane for a length score in 1:54. A six-year-old Grinfromeartoear gelding trained by Agostino Abbatiello for owner Harry Von Knoblauch, Provacativeprince N notched his first win in six starts overall this year after prepping for his US debut upon arriving from New Zealand with a sharp qualifying score at Monticello Raceway in 1:59.
Then one race later on the card, Santa Fe Beachboy (Bartlett) overcame a long, first over trip to wear down Doctor Butch for a length score in 1:52.4 in the $35,000 Preferred Handicap for pacers. A six-year-old Somebeachsomewhere stallion trained by Richard Banca, Santa Fe Beachboy now owns a 5-5-1 slate and $170,000 bankroll from 28 starts this year and likely earned a spot back in the $45,000 Open Handicap next weekend.
Speaking of the Open Handicap, Take It Back Terry (George Brennan) benefited from a pocket trip behind First Class Horse to narrowly prevail in 1:52.4. Then three races later in the finale, Te Kawau N (Stratton) and Windsun Stetson (Brent Holland), both of which had won conditioned events at Pocono Downs one week earlier, finished 1-2 at odds of even-money and 90-1, respectively, in 1:53.4 in a non-winners of $20,000 last five starts class.
