The BC Juvenile Fillies History
The Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies is a $2 million race that brings together the best 2-year-old female horses. In nearly all cases over the years, the winner of the Juvenile Fillies has been named Champion 2-Year-Old Filly.
The Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies has been a part of the world championships since 1984. It is considered a pivotal race in helping determine the shape of the three-year-old filly class for the following year. Usually run at 1 1/16th miles, the race has been contested at 1 mile three times in 1984, 1985 and 1987. It was also run at 1 1/8th miles in 2002.
In the last several years, there have been several major long shots to win the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies race. In 2016 it was Champagne Room (33-1). In 2014 winner was Take Charge Brandi (66-1), the longest shot to ever win the race, and the well-bred filly rewarded her backers with a $125.40 return on a $2 win wager. In 2013 Ria Antonia (32-1) pulled another major upset.
The sensational Songbird won the 2015 edition as the heavy 3-5 odds favorite, and in the history of the Juvenile Fillies, more than half the post time favorites (18) have won the race. Two winners won via disqualification: the inaugural Breeders’ Cup in 1984 by Outstandingly and 2013 by Ria Antonia. Recent winners in top form have fared well, as 13 of the past 19 Juvenile Fillies champs won their final prep race. A startling stat to note is that horses that went to post at 5-1 odds or greater in their last start are just 2-for-97 in the Juvenile Fillies.
Most of the horses that win the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies will go on to be crowned the American Two-Year-Old Filly of the year, but two horses have gone on to be so much more.
Beholder is the most well renowned winner of the race, having done so in 2012 with a time of 1:43.61. The now retired mare would go on to collect a record of 18-6-0 in 26 starts and $6,156,000 in career earnings along with Eclipse Awards as the best horse in her age category. Her first honor was as the American Champion Two-Year Old Filly in 2012, followed by the American Champion Three-Year Old Filly in 2013. Beholder would also win the 2015 and 2016 Eclipse Award for American Champion Older Dirt Female Horse.
Songbird has followed in Beholder’s footsteps with a daunting record of 15-2-0 I 15 starts with earnings of $4,692,000. She won the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile in 2015 and would go on to be recognized as the American Champion Two-Year-Old a year prior to winning the American Champion Three-Year-Old award in 2016.
Both Beholder and Songbird competed ferociously against one another in the 2016 Breeders’ Cup Distaff and registered a photo finish in one of the most exciting races of all time. They are easily the most accomplished prospects to emerge from the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies event.

2016 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Results
The 2016 Breeders’ Cup World Championships was held from November 4th through the 5th at the Santa Anita Racetrack in Arcadia, California. It was the 33rd edition of the Breeders’ Cup.
The Hands Winery Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies (G1) provided quite the unexpected shock when 33-1 longshot Champagne Room crossed the finish line in first. Nobody saw the unexperienced daughter of Broken Vow as a credible threat to take home the Juvenile Fillies, seeing as how she only had one win in four career starts heading into the race. But, as we all know, anything can happen on the racetrack once the starting gates fly open. Trainer Peter Eurton certainly knows that.
“This means a lot to me,” said Eurton. “I’m trying to hold it in. I’m pretty emotional about it.”
Champagne Room edged out runner-up Valadorna by ¾ of a length, while pre-race favourite American Gal (4-1 odds) finished in third, an additional 3 ¼ lengths behind. For the win, Champagne Room returned $69.20. A $2 exact (6-3) paid out $723.60, with a $1 trifecta (6-3-12) hit paying $2,347,30, and the 10-cent superfecta (6-3-12-11) returned $2,589.24.
Mario Gutierrez was on top of Champagne Room for the win. It was his second Breeders’ Cup win. He previously rode Nyquist to a win in the 2015 Sentient Jet Breeders’ Cup.
“I had a perfect trip,” said Gutierrez. “She broke really sharp. I was able to settle behind the speed and when I asked her, she ran with all her heart.”
The win for Champagne Room improved her career record to 2-1-1 in five career starts.
