2026 Kentucky Oaks winner: Always a Runner (5-1) wins the 152nd Kentucky Oaks

May 2nd, 2026

Always a Runner launched a determined rally down the Churchill Downs homestretch to post a comfortable victory in Friday’s 152nd running of the $1.5 million Kentucky Oaks (G1).

The lightly raced daughter of Gun Runner brought her career record to a perfect 3-for-3. Under a perfect ride from jockey Jose Ortiz, Always a Runner rated in midfield between horses as Explora set fractions of :23.08, :46.85, and 1:10.78, then shifted outside for the drive and wore down the leaders to triumph by 1 1/4 lengths in 1:48.82.

Meaning, who raced fifth in the early stages, bid for the lead in the homestretch, but couldn’t outkick Always a Runner and settled for second place. Counting Stars saved ground and rallied late to edge Explora by a neck for third place, followed by Prom Queen, Zany, Percy’s Bar, Dazzling Dame, Resist, Search Party, Pashmina, Lovely Grey, and Brooklyn Blonde.

Always a Runner entered the Kentucky Oaks off a runaway debut win at Tampa Bay Downs and a 1 1/4-length triumph in the Gazelle (G3) at Aqueduct. She was one of four fillies to start at 5-1 odds in a seemingly wide-open edition of the Kentucky Oaks, but by a narrow margin she was the third choice in the betting behind Zany and Percy’s Bar.

After claiming the winner’s share of the Kentucky Oaks purse, Always a Runner boasts career earnings of $984,800.

Bred by Three Chimneys Farm, Always a Runner was purchased for $1.05 million as a yearling by Douglas Scharbauer, who co-owns the filly with Three Chimneys Farm. She was produced by the Malibu Moon mare Always Carina, runner-up in the 2021 Mother Goose (G2).

Always a Runner is the first Kentucky Oaks winner trained by Chad Brown, but the second to be ridden by Ortiz, who previously scored aboard Serengeti Empress in 2019.

Always a Runner paid $13.04 to win, $7.46 to place, and $5.44 to show. Meaning generated a place payoff of $7.44 and a show payoff of $5.62. Counting Stars returned $5.36 to show. The $2 exacta paid $97.58, the 50-cent trifecta $193.87, the $1 superfecta $1,845.74, and the $1 Super High 5 $7,493.29.
