‘All others,’ Life Is Good popular in KDFW Pool 1; Into Mischief favored among sires

While the “All other 3-year-old males” option remained the 6-5 favorite in Pool 1 of the 2021 Kentucky Derby Future Wager (KDFW), Life Is Good plunged from a 15-1 morning line to close as the 5-1 individual choice. The first of five KDFW pools opened Thanksgiving Day and ran through Sunday evening at 6 p.m. (ET), concurrently with the Kentucky Derby Sire Future Wager.
Bettors were seizing on Life Is Good’s parallels with current Derby winner Authentic, who likely clinched Horse of the Year honors in the Breeders’ Cup Classic (G1). Both sons of Into Mischief were unveiled during Del Mar’s Bing Crosby season by Hall of Famer Bob Baffert, who shares the all-time Derby trainers’ record with six wins. Life Is Good was an even better-looking winner than Authentic on debut, drawing off by 9 1/2 lengths on Nov. 22.
Presumptive divisional champion Essential Quality, the 10-1 morning line favorite among the individual interests, was trimmed to 8-1. Trained by Brad Cox for Godolphin, the unbeaten winner of the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile (G1) and Breeders’ Futurity (G1) is by far the most accomplished member of the crop so far.
Jackie’s Warrior and Highly Motivated were both 18-1, the former contracting from a 20-1 morning line and the latter inching up from a 15-1 start. Fourth as the Juvenile favorite for Steve Asmussen, Jackie’s Warrior attracted slightly more in the Win pool ($8,272 compared to $7,941 for Highly Motivated). The Chad-Brown trained Highly Motivated, another Into Mischief colt, dominated the Nov. 6 Nyquist on Breeders’ Cup Future Stars Friday.
Keepmeinmind (19-1), third in the Juvenile, was the only other to eclipse the 20-1 threshold. The Robertino Diodoro pupil earned an overdue maiden win in Saturday’s Kentucky Jockey Club (G2) at Churchill Downs, the only U.S. scoring race held during Pool 1.
Given the popularity of Life Is Good and Highly Motivated, Into Mischief ranked as the overall favorite in the Kentucky Derby Sire Future Wager. The leading sire, who recently broke Tapit’s record for single-season progeny earnings by a North American stallion, saw his price drop from 6-1 to 4-1. Aside from his sons named in Pool 1, Into Mischief also furnished a “Stars of Tomorrow II” allowance victor at Churchill Saturday in Mandaloun.
“All other sires” finished as the second choice at 5-1. Tapit, sire of Essential Quality, ended up holding to his 6-1 morning line. Hall of Famer Curlin was clipped from 15-1 to 12-1, and Triple Crown champion American Pharoah shortened from 20-1 to 13-1.

Pool 2 of the KDFW is on tap for Jan. 22-24, 2021. After Pool 3 spans Feb. 12-14, the final opportunities come in March. Pool 4 runs alongside the one Kentucky Oaks Future Wager Mar. 5-7, and Pool 5 is slated for Mar. 26-28.
