Breeders’ Cup 2020: Playing the multi-race bets Friday, Nov. 6

Multiple Pick 3s, a Pick 4, even a Pick 5 — there are several enticing multi-race wagers to choose from on Breeders’ Cup Friday at Keeneland.

But why choose between them? With the potential for big payoffs across the board, we’ve taken a $200 budget and put together proposed tickets for every Pick 3, Pick 4, and Pick 5 offered on Friday’s five Breeders’ Cup races. You can play along with every bet, pick and choose the ones you like best, or modify the tickets to match your own opinions.

Race 6: Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint (G2, 2:30 p.m. ET)

In a large field, with no shortage of logical contenders, I’ll take a stand with #14 Golden Pal (8-5), who hails from the barn of master 2-year-old trainer Wesley Ward.

The runner-up in the Norfolk (G2) at Royal Ascot, the son of Uncle Mo most recently flashed excellent early speed and a terrific turn of foot to dominate Saratoga’s Skidmore S. by 3 1/2 lengths.

The wide draw is a concern, but I suspect Golden Pal is a cut above his rivals. In the interest of keeping multi-race wagers affordable, I’ll make Golden Pal a short-priced single.

Race 7: Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf (G1, 3:10 p.m. ET)

European shippers usually have an advantage in this 1-mile turf test, and there are plenty to choose from.

Irish trainer Aidan O’Brien has won this race four times since 2011 and has a strong chance to nab a fifth victory with #9 Battleground (6-1), a beautifully bred son of War Front, out of 2015 Breeders’ Cup Turf (G1) winner Found. Battleground was a confident winner of the 7-furlong Vintage (G2) at Goodwood and will retain the services of O’Brien’s go-to jockey Ryan Moore.

#1 Sealiway (8-1), #2 New Mandate (12-1), and #5 Cadillac have all won group stakes races in Europe and warrant inclusion in this competitive field. For good measure, we’ll toss in #6 Mutasaabeq (5-1), who looms as the best of the American contingent, after he unleashed an explosive rally to win Keeneland’s Bourbon (G2) by 2 1/4 lengths.

Race 8: Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies (G1, 3:50 p.m. ET)

#7 Princess Noor (9-5) is the favorite, after she cruised to effortless victories in the Del Mar Debutante (G1) and Chandelier (G2), but the daughter of Not This Time isn’t a standout in terms of Brisnet Speed figures, and she will face a couple formidable rivals at Keeneland.

Chief among them is #1 Simply Ravishing (5-2), who dominated Keeneland’s 1 1/16-mile Alcibiades (G1) by 6 1/4 lengths. With a major victory over the track and distance of the Juvenile Fillies, this undefeated youngster looms as a frontrunning threat under jockey Luis Saez.

#3 Dayoutofoftheoffice (5-2), a pace-tracking winner of the Frizette (G1), is another contender with the speed figures to challenge for victory. We’ll take a stand against Princess Noor and use these two logical alternatives instead.

Race 9: Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf (G1, 4:30 p.m. ET)

Whereas the Juvenile Turf is usually won by a European shipper, the home team has prevailed in 10 out of 12 editions of the Juvenile Fillies Turf, including the last six. With this in mind, I’ll favor the undefeated American hopefuls #4 Plum Ali (4-1) and #5 Aunt Pearl (3-1), both graded stakes winners conditioned by high-percentage trainers.

But I wouldn’t exclude #10 Campanelle (4-1). Though her race record has a European flair, with victories in the Queen Mary (G2) at Royal Ascot and the Prix Morny (G1) at Deauville, she trains in the U.S. with Wesley Ward. The speedy daughter of Kodiac is undefeated in three starts and looms as a dangerous threat with 14-time Breeders’ Cup-winning jockey Frankie Dettori aboard.

Race 10: Breeders’ Cup Juvenile (G1, 5:15 p.m. ET)

#7 Jackie’s Warrior (7-5) will be a single for many, after he dominated the Saratoga Special (G2), Hopeful (G1), and Champagne (G1) in frontrunning fashion. He is a standout in terms of Brisnet Speed ratings, but he has never run around two turns and figures to face more pace pressure in the Juvenile.

For these reasons, I’ll also include #3 Reinvestment Risk (9-2), the runner-up in the Hopeful and Champagne. The son of Upstart is clearly the second-fastest contender on paper and would benefit from a contested pace, which would allow him to settle farther off the lead and make one run down the lane.
