The 2026 Breeders’ Cup at Keeneland is 11 days away. Catch up on the latest news and developments with our weekly Breeders’ Cup Roundup:
Ombudsman wins Champion Stakes, aims for Turf
The final leg of the Breeders’ Cup Challenge Series could yield a high-profile Breeders’ Cup starter. Ombudsman, who added to his decorated record with a triumph in Saturday’s Champion (G1) at Ascot in England, will wheel back on just two weeks of rest for the Breeders’ Cup Turf (G1), per the Racing Post.
The 1 1/4-mile Champion awarded a “Win and You’re In” berth to the Turf, a redundant prize for Ombudsman since he’d already earned his ticket via a four-length demolition of the Prince of Wales’s (G1) at Royal Ascot. But the Champion signaled a return to form for Ombudsman, who bounced back from a fourth-place finish in the Juddmonte International (G1) to deliver one of his finest performances.
Facing five rivals over good ground, Ombudsman rated in third place for much of the journey before shifting outside and unleashing a powerful finish down the homestretch to defeat six-time Group 1 winner Calandagan by 3 3/4 lengths in 2:04.22.
The finish reversed the outcome of the 2025 Champion, in which Calandagan got the better of Ombudsman by 2 1/4 lengths.
Now a five-time Group 1 winner, Ombudsman heads to Keeneland as one of the most accomplished contenders for the Breeders’ Cup Turf, though the 1 1/2-mile distance of the Turf is unexplored territory for the Godolphin color-bearer. Ombudsman has yet to race farther than 1 5/16 miles.
Minnie Hauk rebounds in British Champions Fillies & Mares
Minnie Hauk, who finished sixth as the favorite in the 2025 Breeders’ Cup Turf, could potentially return to the Turf or take aim at the Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Turf (G1) after bouncing back to winning form in Saturday’s 1 1/2-mile British Champions Fillies & Mares (G1) at Ascot, per At The Races.
A three-time Group 1 winner in 2025, Minnie Hauk has largely struggled in 2026 and arrived at Ascot off five straight defeats, including a 10th-place finish in the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe (G1) on Oct. 4. Trainer Aidan O’Brien told At The Races that Minnie Hauk “had trouble with her feet” this year, but she put her defeats behind her in the Fillies & Mares, racing in second place for much of the journey before edging ahead to beat the improving three-year-old Believed by 1 1/2 lengths in 2:29.49.
The Fillies & Mares marked Minnie Hauk’s first Group 1 win of 2026, though she did run second behind Ombudsman in the Prince of Wales’s and third to Kalpana in the Yorkshire Oaks (G1). Kalpana finished seventh in the Fillies & Mares.
Sovereignty, Forever Young posted workouts ahead of Classic
Two of the favorites for the Breeders’ Cup Classic (G1) continued their preparations for the $7 million race by posting timed workouts last week.
Sovereignty, the 2025 Horse of the Year who missed last year’s Classic with a fever, worked five furlongs in 1:02.76 over Saratoga’s Oklahoma training track on Sunday.
On the same day at Belmont Park, reigning Classic winner and 2025 champion older dirt male Forever Young traveled half a mile in :49.65.
Other high-profile Classic contenders in action last week included reigning Kentucky Derby (G1) and Belmont (G1) winner Golden Tempo, who breezed half a mile in :48.40 on Friday at Keeneland; Dubai World Cup (G1) conqueror Magnitude, who clocked five furlongs in 1:00.60 on Saturday at Keeneland; and Pacific Classic (G1) hero Knightsbridge, who traveled five furlongs in 1:01.40 over the Oklahoma training track on Thursday.
Knightsbridge, a stablemate of Sovereignty, remains under consideration for the Classic and the Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile (G1).
