Churchill Downs: How to bet the $126,958 Single 6 carryover on Nov. 15

November 15th, 2020

Another day, another few thousand dollars added to the Single 6 jackpot at Churchill Downs. The local racing week concludes on Sunday with a carryover pool of $126,958 up for grabs.

Sweeping the whole jackpot requires holding the only winning ticket on the day, a task that involves smart handicapping, some significant longshot winners, and a lot of luck.

But even when multiple bettors assemble winning tickets, the payoffs are usually lucrative, so let’s take $50 and put together a Single 6 play for the Sunday card.

Saturday recap

The Saturday card took a bit of a twist with the announcement that the Churchill Downs turf course will be given a break through at least Nov. 22, prompting a pair of grass races—including the Mrs. Revere (G3)—to be transferred to the main track.

Another twist came in the day’s eighth race, when the unheralded longshot Big Beautiful Wall prevailed as the 14-1 seventh choice in a field of nine. Although the remaining results were chalky—with five winners starting at 16-5 or less—the one upset was sufficient to trigger a hefty Single 6 payoff of $8,261.41, far above the $2,877.59 return for a theoretical $2 win parlay across the six winners.

Sunday insights

The sequence kicks off in Race 5, a 1-mile maiden special weight for 2-year-olds. #3 Santa Cruiser (2-1) is an obvious favorite after finishing third in his debut behind future Breeders’ Cup Juvenile (G1) winner Essential Quality. The son of Dialed In improved to occupy the runner-up spot in his second start and can graduate third-time out while stretching out over a mile. #6 Antigravity (5-2), runner-up over 1 1/16 miles at Keeneland last month, warrants inclusion on deeper tickets.

Race 6 is a 7-furlong, $25,000 claiming race with eight starters in the mix. There are a few former stakes horses in the mix, including 2015 Kentucky Derby (G1) starter #7 Frammento (10-1). But we’ll favor #3 Vice Versa (3-1), who takes a small step down the class ladder after winning for a $30,000 tag at Keeneland. We’ll also support #1 Super Sol (5-2) and #8 Oro de Tejano (10-1), two runners their first starts for trainers who excel with recent claiming acquisitions.

Race 7 was supposed to take place on turf, but the 5 1/2-furlong allowance event will instead be run over the main track. We’ll spread deep with fillies and mares who have shown both stakes-winning speed and a proficiency for dirt, namely Unbridled Sidney S. winner #1 Ambassador Luna (8-1), Bolton Landing S. winner #2 Stillwater Cove (7-2), Jersey Lilly Turf S. winner #4 Winning Envelope (3-1), and Landaluce S. winner #5 Surrender Now (8-1).

If there’s a single in the Single 6 sequence, it’s surely #5 Caddo River (8-5) in Race 8, a 1-mile maiden special weight for 2-year-olds. The Brad Cox trainee has finished second against quality competition in his first two starts, putting up solid Brisnet Speed ratings (87 and 89) more than sufficient to win Sunday’s race. For good measure, ultra-hot jockey Florent Geroux takes the mount.

Race 9 is a 1-mile allowance race with just seven entries. #2 Icon (3-1) broke his maiden over this track and distance last fall and recently returned to action with a close seventh-place effort on turf at Churchill Downs. The son of Tapit will transition back to dirt for hot trainer Steve Asmussen and looms a logical candidate for victory, though #4 Motagally (7-2) and #6 Pit Boss (5-1) have the Brisnet Speed ratings to contend while making their first starts for high-percentage trainers.

The sequence wraps up in Race 10, a 1 1/16-mile maiden special weight for 2-year-olds. Originally slated to be run on turf, the event will instead take place on dirt. Assuming there are a few scratches from the main body of the field, I’ll favor the also-eligible #15 Swingman (3-1), who has finished third in his first two starts. The son of Belmont Stakes (G1) winner Tonalist is progressing in the right direction for trainer Kenny McPeek (a 20% winner at Churchill Downs) and should sit a clean trip from his outside draw. #3 Public Information (6-1) and #10 King Uhtred (6-1) will complete my ticket.

$0.20-cent Single 6: 3,6 with 1,3,8 with 1,2,4,5 with 5 with 2,4,6 with 3,10,15 ($43.20)

Good luck!
